Chapter Eight
It had taken a day to make Lemonâs house spotless by changing the furniture and the carpet. They had to be careful to make the changes when she wasnât home, or her neighbors.
Nate supervised everything, and as he sat opposite her father in the very same café where theyâd been not too long ago, all he wanted to do was be with Lemon.
âIâve arranged a meeting with the OâLeaves. There will be an agreement worked out. That will happen this evening.â
âWhy are you telling me this, sir?â he asked.
âSimple. It is time for you to move on.â Rocco pulled out an address. âIâve got another job for you.â
Nate didnât pick up the card. He wasnât interested in any other job. âI decline.â
âI have Lemonâs care handled.â
âThe OâLeaves are not the only ones after her, sir. With all due respect, I have killed some contract killers in the last few months. All of them with a vendetta against you. She is your weakness, and getting rid of me will only put her life at risk.â
Rocco snapped his fingers. âLeave us.â
One by one, the guards left, as did the workers. The café was owned by Rocco.
Nate tensed up as he reached into his jacket. He didnât calm down even as a file was on the table.
âI gave you permission to take care of my daughter, Evans. I did not give you permission to use her.â Rocco opened the file, and Nate didnât need to glance down to see the pictures. âYouâre not going to look?â
âI donât need to look when Iâm the one who sent them to you,â Nate said.
He wasnât going to keep looking over his shoulder. Rocco was a powerful man. He put his fingers together and leaned forward, resting his hands on the table. âI know who you are, Rocco, and what youâre capable of. I know you care very deeply about your daughter, and I admire you for it, but I also know that you cannot take care of her.â He held his hands up. âI mean no disrespect. Iâm stating a fact and the truth. You and I both know it.â
âYou know nothing.â
âI know Lemon wants nothing to do with you. She never speaks of you. She talks about her mother all the time. You, not a mention. You have a real family. A wife and kids, and Lemon is never going to fit into that world. We both know this. Itâs why you fell for her mother. She was never touched by darkness, and neither is Lemon.â
âLetâs cut the crap. What is it you want?â
âLemon. Sheâs mine. I sent you those pictures to give you a chance to calm down. So we can talk like gentlemen.â
Rocco brandished a gun, aiming it at him. âAnd you think I negotiate with men like you?â
âIâm the best man there is. The threat to Lemonâs life will never go away. Do you think she will ever forgive you if you draw her into your life? She cannot stand you. Thatâs not going to change overnight, if at all.
