Chapter Thirteen

Nick followed the others, tailing them for two reasons, he didn’t want to fall off the board he was still trying to master and make fool of himself in front of the girl. And also he wanted to consider what they’d learned.

The old sheriff was looking for the money for himself? Or was he looking for clues about Smith and why Will Terry was snooping around, so he could solve the crime and return the money to the bank?

He was pretty sure Zeke wondered the same thing, and not only that but with everyone in the town having gifts why hadn’t anyone ever found the money, or solved the mystery of Smith’s disappearance?

When they reached the house, little red, Nana’s car, was in the drive. That meant they had to pretend to have invited the girl, he wouldn’t think of her as Buffy, that was too friendly and he had no intentions of anything like that.

They hopped off their boards and picked them up, settling them by the door as they went inside.

“Nana?” Nick called out.

Nana rounded the corner from the hall, “Boys, I’d like...” Her eyes rounded at the sight of their guest. “Oh, Buffy, how is your grandpa Johansen doing? Is he still over at Jorgansville hospital?”

Bart must get all his question asking tendencies from their nana. She seemed to be full of questions just like Young Bart.

“Hi, Mrs. Adams. Grandpa is doing great, Mom brought him home yesterday. He’s as sneaky as ever.” And there she went, giggling again.

Nick swore if the girl giggled the whole time, he didn’t care what his cousins thought, he’d tell her to get the heck out of there.

“Good, he has always been a prankster. I hope your mom has the china cabinets locked or you may have dishes flying all over.”

“Oh, she has everything under padlock. Grandpa loves to create whirlwinds.” Another small giggle mingled with a hiccup. “I think the hospital called and asked her to come get Grandpa because he had all kinds of things flying off trays and stuff.”

“Oh dear, that could be a bit dangerous in a hospital, what with all the scalpels and everything.”

Nick looked at his cousins, ready to be out of there. What did he care about some old codger that had the same gift as he did. Though the idea of creating a whirlwind did have some appeal, maybe when he got to be old as dirt he’d have to remember to try it. After all, babies and old people, everyone seemed to tolerate and put up with their antics. But at his age his parents were always telling him, you should know better. Apparently, when you got old you lost your common sense.

“Boys, after Buffy leaves we’ll have dinner and we’ll talk.” Nana didn’t wait for an answer but left them all standing in the hall.

Nick shrugged, it was going to be an interesting dinner. “Come on.”

“Do you think the wireless will reach to the tree house?” Zeke asked.

“Yes,” Nana called from the kitchen.
