GERIATRIC ASSENT

Decision making with and for a geriatric (65 years of age and older) patient with diminished decision-making capacity. The patient should be asked by the surrogate and the healthcare team what is important to him or her, to identify his or her values, and these should be considered by the surrogate and care team. The importance of these values to the patient, especially as they bear on the patient’s current and future quality of life, should be weighed in the context of the prima facie ethical obligation to protect the life and health of the patient. Both of these clinically ethically significant considerations must be taken into account and weighed against each other, to meet the substituted judgment standard of surrogate decision making. See also ASSENT.
