But there is, thinks Freud, something deeper and more general that Sophocles has to teach us than the vicissitudes of relationships between parents and children, and the aggression and sexual tension with which they are fraught. It is that we cannot escape our fate. The oracle has informed Laius that he will be killed by his son and Oedipus that he will kill his father. Both men do what they can to defy their fate, but they cannot escape their destiny: the prophecy is ultimately fulfilled. This is the heart not only of the tragedy of Oedipus, but of all tragedy. Its essence is to be found in the futile struggle of human beings to escape the fate which the gods have decreed for them. But the struggle will never succeed, fate will always triumph, and, Freud concludes, “resignation to the will of God and confession of one’s own helplessness is the lesson which the deeply-moved spectator is to learn from the tragedy” (The Interpretation of Dreams, p. 222).
