“Hey, Mom.”

“What were you thinking?” I jerk back from the high-pitched screech coming through the phone.

“What’s wrong?” I ask, instantly on alert.

“What happened? I talked to your sister. Do you know what she told me?”

I close my eyes. Here we go … the moment where everything goes sideways. I can feel Ezra’s eyes on me, but I can’t bring myself to look up and see the same disappointment I’ve seen time and time again with others. I grit my teeth.

“No. What did she say?”

“That she’s been home alone all morning so you could take your girlfriend on a date.” She treats the word like it’s dirty.

“That is absolutely correct.”

“What?” she squawks like a wet hen. “I thought you understood what taking of her care would require. You can’t just decide it’s too much work because you’re thinking with the wrong—”

“That is enough, Mother.” I won’t have her disrespecting Ezra.

She splutters like she’s been hit in the face with water. “You’re cutting me off now?”

“Yes I am, because you’re out of line. You put me in charge, and I’m caring for her my way.”

“On what planet is leaving her alone not a form of neglect?”

I clench my jaw and grip the phone tighter. “That’s an inflammatory accusation.”

“It’s a concerned observation,” my mother counters. She called, ready to fight.

“And what did Susie say?”

“She loved it, obviously. Eating cereal and who knows what else kind of crap.”

“It’s the weekend.”

“You know she has to watch her weight.”

“Good thing she’s lost ten pounds since she started swimming then, isn’t it?” I ask kindly. I refuse to let her get under my skin. This moment was always going to happen.

She huffs. Her breathing grows ragged. “So disrespectful.”

I close my eyes, ignoring the gut punch the words deliver. I’m not sure if this results from genuine concern or an unexpected side effect of her stroke. I did know behavioral changes were a possibility.

“No, Mom. I’m doing what you asked me to do. I’m caring for her the best way I can. She’s flourishing with her new schedule. I know it might not be the way you would have done it, but you’re no longer in charge. When you spoke with Susan, how did she sound?”

“What does that matter?” Mom snaps.

“It seems like it’s the most important thing in this situation.”

Ezra covers my hand with hers. I meet her concerned gaze.

“She’s not an adult. You can’t treat her like one.”

“She is, Mom. Yes, she has some differences and things she needs to work on, but she’s not a kid. Her mind needs more stimulation, and she rebelled when she first moved in because she wants more out of life. Who am I to deny her? This was less than four hours alone in the house. There’s plenty of food to eat, and she has all the emergency numbers. What’s wrong with letting my thirty-five-year-old sister look after herself for that amount of time?”

“I don’t like this, Solomon.”

“I understand that.” I lean back in my seat. “But I’m doing this with the school’s blessing and Dr.
