All Colin knew was we found his cousin. He didn’t know anything about how he had a cousin or who the cousin was. I was not looking forward to telling him.

Penny and I were both on edge all day. Instead of pacing my office and feeling off base, I sent Melody a message.

RH214: Meeting with Colin today. Think I might throw up.

I set my phone on my desk and told myself I wasn’t waiting for her to reply, but when she did, I snatched the phone up so fast I almost dropped it.

WM: That would probably go over like a fart in church. Drink something and breathe. The worst is over. He already knows what news you’re giving him. It’s unlikely he knows his cousin. You’re going to do great.

RH214: Thanks. You always know what to say to make me feel better.

WM: Just trying to help. I gotta run. At work.

I tucked my phone away and took a deep breath. Then another. Melody was right. Colin handled the news of an unknown cousin well. The meeting was only to talk to him about who the cousin was and tell him what I knew. And to ask him if he had an interest in meeting his cousin.

When Colin knocked on my door thirty minutes later, I was feeling more in control. We shook hands and he sat across from me, holding my gaze with his own dark one.

“Just rip the band-aid off and tell me,” he said.

“Your cousin’s name is Carter Sinclair. He lives closer to Albany. He grew up south of Syracuse. He’s an only child, and his mother was your father’s sister.”

“Was?” Colin asked.

I nodded. “She and her husband both died a few years ago. Carter is married, he has two kids, and he has a good job from what I can tell. He’s connected to his community.”

“So, he’s not going to want to move here, right?”

I shook my head. “Not necessarily. I have a meeting with him tomorrow to tell him everything.”

“He doesn’t know yet?”

I shook my head again. “I’ve reached out to the attorney for your grandmother’s estate. Since her will explicitly said the farm was to go to her grandson, they need to be there to notify him. We can’t tell him over the phone. We’d also like you to be there.”

Colin sat back in his chair with a huff. He ran a hand over his dark hair and down his face. He leaned forward with an exhale and looked up at me. “What the hell am I supposed to do?”

I took a breath and laid it all out for him. “You never withheld information. You had no idea you had a cousin, or an aunt, so you’re not in trouble with any of this. The worst case scenario for you is you have a partner who knows nothing about working outside.”

Colin’s eyebrows went up and his mouth curled into a wry smile. “He’s a desk jockey?”

I nodded. “He is. If I were to guess, he’s not going to want to leave his life.
