Chapter 6- Carter
It takes me a while, but I eventually manage to break away from Skylar and left her chatting with Josh. I cut a few conversations short as I make my way through the wedding reception, past the ball room’s big Christmas tree, and down the hallway to the groomsmen’s room. I need a few minutes to myself and it’s the closest place I have to a sanctuary.
I shut the door behind me and lean against the wall with a sigh.
“Thank god.” I mutter to myself as I eye the small bar off to my left. I grab a random bottle of bourbon and poor a glass. This whole wedding is a lot more difficult than I thought it was going to be. I thought I was going to have to beat back feelings of anger and resentment the moment I laid eyes on Haley, but instead I’m having to fight entirely different feelings. The moment we met in the hallway before the ceremony, it felt like we quickly fell into our old routine. For just a little bit, my life felt right again.
I didn’t realize how lost I’ve been these past six months.
I look up at myself in the small mirror behind the bar. “It’s over, Carter. Get over her.” I take a big gulp of bourbon and hiss as it burns all the way down.
Then the door opens.
“I’ll be right out.” I say, half expecting one of the other groomsmen to see where I’ve gone. But it’s not.
It’s funny how someone can simultaneously be the person you want to so last and the most.
“Haley?” My mouth falls open. I can only imagine how shocked my face looks. What the hell was in that drink? She shuts the door behind her and stomps toward me like she’s on a mission. I lean against the bar staring at her—half expecting her to slap me or something. “What are you doing in here?”
She steps right up to me, leans up, and grabs the collar of my tuxedo jacket to pull me closer. “I fucking hate you.” She stares at me with fire in her eyes.
Then her lips smash against mine. My hand nearly knocks my glass of bourbon off the bar top as I breathe in her scent. Her smell sends that familiar warmth throughout my body and I already feel myself getting hard. My mouth gives way and our tongues dance.
Feeling her in my arms again. Lips together. That gentle moan she always lets out when we kiss. All of it makes me feel more drunk than the alcohol I just downed.
Still, I somehow manage to shake the lustful fog out of my head, grab her arms, and push her away enough for me to talk.
“This isn’t what normal people do if they hate someone.”
“I hate that I can’t hate you.”
This time I don’t even know who leans in first, but our lips crash together again. She groans and her breasts press into my chest. My arm scoops around her lower back as I pull her in tight.
