Evaluating opportunities
If you position yourself well, you'll get more opportunities than you expected. It's a great feeling. And once you have experience, you won't have to fill out an application or any of that nonsense. It's actually quite amazing.
When I tell people about the opportunities I’ve turned down, I get shock, awe, envy and even a few rolled eyes. But you’ll soon see, your skill set is valuable and good people get opportunities thrown at them. I will always listen to new opportunities. I owe that to my family, myself and to the people who have helped develop me over the years. But I analyze them against a list of priorities and will make a quick decision.
My priorities: How I evaluate opportunities
These are roughly in order of priority, but these are the factors I take into account.
1. Location / Remote - It's not impossible to get me to move but the odds are against it. I grew up in the Metroplex (the Dallas/Fort Worth area in Texas, for those not familiar). It's my home. I've been fortunate to be successful within my own backyard. The majority of my family on both sides is within a short drive.
On top of that, I’ve been incredibly blessed to work remote for the last few years. Before that, I worked two blocks from my job. The odds of me going back into an office with a commute are terribly low. I wouldn’t bet on it.
2. Interesting Work - I get bored easily. I can't do the same thing over and over. The moment things get predictable it's time to move on. I want to work in an environment with constant change and diversity. This can be hard to gauge in the job search process because everyone thinks they have a fast-paced, dynamic environment... but they really don't. You'll have to make a judgment call.
For me, this has resulted in staying in the startup world. Lots of change and no two days are the same.
3. Opportunity for Growth - This is two-fold... for me and the company. I want to learn, grow and follow good leaders. I want to have the opportunity to develop as a person and a professional. As for the company, I'm not interested in wasting my time at a sinking company.
I have a tendency to push people towards entrepreneurship or the startup environment. At least a smaller company where you're a person not a number. But some people need to work at larger companies. If that's you, try to work with a company doing well.
4. Comfortable Environment - I want to work somewhere I'm comfortable... T-shirts, shorts and flip flops are a great start but it's not just about dress code. I want to be on a good team. I want to have fun at work. The plastic corporate environment with fake smiles, meeting after meeting and status updates no one reads is fine for some people... not me. No thanks. After working remotely, I’ve seen too much happiness. It would be a struggle for anyone to get me into an office.
