I nip over to the club to wait for Dolly. I’ve got her a bunch of her favourite flowers, just to say sorry for the little incident the other night. She’s not due back for another hour or so, so I may as well go in for a bit. Gavin is sitting with his back to me at the bar as I walk in.

‘Ahem,’ I clear my throat.

‘Aw, Philip,’ he turns and says to me, ‘how’s it going?’

‘Not bad, Gavin. Not too bad at all.’ I sit down next to him

‘Glad to hear it.’ He gestures to the barman. ‘Another pint please, Jamie son.’

‘Sorry,’ I say, jingling my car keys, ‘I’m driving. Just popped in while I’m waiting on Dolly.’

‘Suit yourself,’ he sighs. ‘Miss the missus while she was away?’

‘I did as a matter of fact. Never thought I’d say that. House is too quiet without her, to be honest.’

‘Ach away,’ he says, shaking his head, ‘nothing better than some time to yourself. While the cat’s away and all that, eh?’

‘Aye, I suppose.’

‘So, this tournament,’ he looks at me with a smirk. ‘Big Angie is a cert to win the women’s competition but I’m relying on you to win the men’s competition. Can I count on you, Philip?’

‘Course you can,’ I say sternly.

‘I know there’s not a lot of money on offer for the winner of the men’s competition, that’s my daughter for you, but I trust that won’t put you off giving it your all?’

I’ll be walking away with both the men’s and women’s prize money at the end of the day so this doesn’t faze me.

‘Course not,’ I say. ‘It’s all about pride for me.’

‘You’re some man, Philip.’ He turns to look out the window as a bus pulls up. ‘Looks like your good lady has returned.’

‘I better go and welcome her home then, eh?’

Dolly steps off the bus. I fetch the flowers from the car and I’m about to walk over to greet her with a cuddle and present her with them but then Angie steps off right behind her. Dolly looks at me with, what I believe to be, utter contempt then turns round and hugs Angie. I see Gavin laughing at the window as my wife embraces that fucking slob. I tighten my grip round the flowers then fling them into a bush. She’s getting fuck all for fraternising with that woman.

‘Aw here,’ Angie shouts after Dolly as she walks towards the car, ‘gies yer phone number, hen.’

Dolly, embarrassingly, obliges. They both shoot me dirty looks.
