Is it near or far?

When asking for directions and you do not exactly know how to get around, it is also useful to know whether the place is near or far. If it is near, it may be near enough to be a walking distance away. If it is far then it would be wiser to take public transport.

Say, you want to know how far it is. You would ask "Is it very far?" In Hindi, you should say, "Kya who yahaam se dhoor hai?" To this, the person you asked may respond saying, "Jee nahi, yahaam se dhoor nahi hai ." That means the place is not far. But if he or she responds saying, "Jee ham, yahaam se dhoor hai," then he or she is telling you the distance is far. You just asked a closed ended question which means you should take note of the words nahi and ham which means ‘no’ and ‘yes’ respectively.

Let's try again with a different question. If it is not far then it must be near but you would want to make sure so you ask, 'Is it close by?' In Hindi, you should say "Kya woh nazdheek hai?" Again, there are two possible answers. The person you asked may either respond saying, "Jee nahi, woh nazdheek nahi hai" or "Jee ham, woh nazdheek hee hai." Can you tell which means 'it is close by' and which means it is not?

The next question you would want to ask if how to get there. So you can say, "Mai kaise ____________ thak pahoonch jaoonga/jaoongee?" Fill in the blank depending on the place you are looking for and trying to get to.
