Taking extra precaution to protect and secure the wires ensures their long life and durability. Performance Distributors offers complete race-prepped wire sets that feature a durable heat sleeve and cylinder number indicators.

Billet aluminum wire looms are great for street rods, but you’re probably not going to see them on too many racecars.

Any old roll of wire sitting on your workbench won’t do the job of transferring voltage. The wires need to have terminals and boots attached to each end, and this is another important area. You want to make sure that the terminals will securely grip and lock to the spark plug and cap terminal. Nothing is worse that having a wire come off during a race. Yanking on a wire while trying to remove it from the plug and having the terminal come off is almost as bad. Always twist the boot back and forth while pulling it off the spark plug.

Spark plug boots probably have one of the worst jobs of the ignition system. Boots need to handle extreme heat from headers and manifolds as well as keep the spark isolated so it goes into the spark plug rather than jumping to ground. All manufacturers deliver good-quality boots, but some applications can just be brutal. With boots, you get what you pay for. Be sure to review the boot material, construction, and feel before making a final decision.

Many companies offer a racing boot kit that is designed to handle more heat. Accel offers spark plug boots made from a special ceramic material.

Accessories

Take care of your wires by securing them from engine heat sources, add extra heat sleeving, and number them. These simple things will help keep your wires, and your ignition’s performance, in top condition. Most companies offer a variety of components to help you get the most out of your spark plug wires ranging from added boot protection to thick heat sleeves.

Moroso offers boot sleeves that are ideal for racing or even for use in a tow-rig application. These sleeves are made from 3M Nextel, a woven ceramic material that can withstand extreme conditions without damage or becoming brittle. Most ignition companies provide rolls of a durable silicone and glass woven sleeve that you slide over the wire for added heat and abrasion protection.

A set of separators is another important accessory for your spark plug wires. Routing and securing the wires from moving parts, hot engine components, linkage, and even other wires are important to the performance and life of your wires. When you’re at racing speeds, such as with a circle track car, a lot of wind pushes and swirls under the hood. Having the wires secure is an important step in bulletproofing the car. Separators range from simple clips that hold the wires together to elaborate billet models that bolt to the engine.

Wire Maintenance

Plug wires have their work cut out for them. They must carry a high amount of voltage over a hot, volatile area. The wires tend to be forgotten and may go without inspection or replacement over time when no problems are evident.
