Early the next morning, Laurel got up and took a picture of a tree that was grossly contorted every which way. “She said she felt sorry for the tree because it had arthritis,” John recalls. “She said she empathized with it because she felt the same way after two days of hiking and climbing. It was like Laurel to do that. She was always taking pictures of something because she absolutely loved the outdoors.”

Rick got up that morning with altitude sickness. He was nauseous and had a pounding headache with chills. His pack load was redistributed throughout the team, so he wouldn’t have to carry as much weight that day. He told me he was out of it that day, just going through the motions to get to the next campsite, but on the hike he was moved by the beauty of his surroundings and started singing. He wrote,
