CHAPTER 22

Ballantyne Country Club area was amazing to Baby Jar. The houses were the kind he only saw on television, not in Charlotte. His world was confined to his public housing project and the streets of the Westside. His school, the streets he hustled in, even the time he’d spent in rehab, didn’t get him out of the Westside. He couldn’t imagine people living like this in Charlotte.

Bone knew the young, naïve and impressionable Jarquis “Baby Jar” Love was in awe. Jar’s silence and bulging eyes told him as much. They passed house after house and each one was more impressive than the previous one. Bone drove slowly because of the snow and slick roads. That allowed them more time to view each house. The inclement weather couldn’t hide their beauty and luxury.

One of these homes belonged to Travis. Thanks to the information from Lisa and Rick, Bone had the exact address. Bone had traveled the community on two occasions and wasn’t sure which house belonged to Travis. He’d circled the neighborhood twice and was approaching Travis’ house for the third time.

“We already saw these, didn’t we?” Jar’s trance was broken by the familiar surroundings.

“Fo’ sho.”

“Why are we looking at these again?” The question came out before Jar realized to whom he was talking.

The nerve of this little punk, Bone thought. He could end Jar’s life without a moment’s notice and never think about him again. He would put up with it, though; there was a greater purpose here. The time would eventually come when it would be necessary to dispose of Jar, but not now. He had the opportunity to continue his manipulation.

“That house, right there, I really like the way it looks.” Bone pointed toward the Moore house.

“I didn’t know they made houses like this around here.”

“What ya mean?”

“I ain’t never seen anything like it. Not live anyway. Must be a bunch of rich white people that live out here.”

“Not everybody that lives out here is white. They might have some change, but that don’t make them rich. I got more loot than most of these folks out here. They got some of everybody out in this joint, even niggas.”

“Only niggas that could live out here are rappers and ball players,” Jar said with the wealth of knowledge that a sixteen-year-old who had never been anywhere possessed.

“That so? Well, I’m a drug dealer, the slickest one in this town, and I’m getting ready to move out here.”

“What?” Jar didn’t think he’d heard that right.

“That’s right. I got a crib under construction up in this joint.” Jar wasn’t sure how to take it. Bone hadn’t steered him wrong so far, but could he be buying a house in a neighborhood like this? Did Bone really have that kind of paper behind him? “Where’s it at?”

“Not far from here. These ma’fuckers ’bout to get them a new neighbor. A real nigga’s about to set up camp. I’ma turn all these fools out. This gonna be my new hood.”

“These people ain’t gonna let that happen.
