8.102. The king asked for Artemisia’s advice in this way, and these are the words with which she answered him: “It is hard, my king, to give the best possible advice to one who asks for it. Nevertheless, as your affairs now stand, it seems to me that you would be right to return home. As for Mardonius, if he prefers to remain and promises to do as he has said, then by all means leave him behind, with the troops that he desires. If his plan succeeds and he defeats the Greeks, as he promises, it will be your victory, master, because your slaves will have accomplished it. If, on the other hand, things turn out opposite to his wishes, we will endure no great loss, so long as you are safe and your household is in no danger. The Greeks, too, while you are alive and your household flourishes, must be prepared to fight a great many battles for their freedom. If, on the other hand, Mardonius fails, it makes no difference—they will have won a very small triumph—a victory over one of your slaves! Remember also, you go home having accomplished the purpose of your expedition—you burned Athens!”
