Candace was stunningly beautiful. I just couldn’t get over it. During our last encounter, I was so drunk I didn’t take the time to drink in her beauty.

But now that I was completely sober and lying naked next to her, I could breathe it all in.

“I’m not going to stop dating you, you know,” I told her very matter-of-factly.

Her face crinkled up. “But we have to. I can’t do this with my work and—”

“We’ll keep it secret,” I told her. “We’ll do it exactly like this. Nobody is ever going to find out. And you’re already looking for other jobs, right?”

“Yeah, I am, but that doesn’t mean the job I have now isn’t important to keep. Trust me, I need the money.”

I pushed the hair out of her face gently. The way she said that made things sound kind of urgent.

“Are you in some kind of trouble?” I asked her. “Financially, I mean.”

“No, no trouble.” she said, but I got the feeling it was a lie.

“Look, if you really got fired and were in some financial trouble, you know I’d help you, right? It’d be no problem—”

She stopped me. “No, absolutely not. I’m not going to take your money, never. I’m not one of those people, okay? I’m no gold digger.”

“That’s not what I meant at all,” I told her. “You act like you have something to prove here.”

“Well I do, don’t I? Every other person you’ve dated has been one. I want to show you that I’m not that kind of girl.”

I kissed the top of her head. “You don’t have to prove that to me at all. I know you’re genuine. Don’t worry, I don’t expect you to go claiming any fake illnesses anytime soon or trying to force me out of the closet.” I laughed.

But she didn’t.

“I’m sorry, did I say something or—”

“No, you didn’t. Nothing. Anyway, that’s why it’s vital I keep my job. Because I want to stay independent of you, no matter how rich you may be. Even if I don’t have anything to prove, that’s my nature. I don’t take handouts.”

“Alright, alright,” I agreed. “So you won’t lose your job. We’ll keep this just between us, I promise.”

“I don’t know…” she said hesitantly, looking off to the side instead of directly at me.

I tilted her face back to mine. “Why are you trying to put distance between us right now, Candace? If I did something wrong, just tell me.”

“It’s not that,” she mumbled.

“But you are distancing yourself?”

“Yes,” she admitted.

“Well, why?”

“Because… because honestly, you scare me.”

“I… scare you?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“I don’t know… it’s just you. The way I feel about you. I barely know you, and yet I feel such a strong connection to you.”

“And why should that scare you?” I asked. “Don’t you believe that I feel the same way about you?”

“I do, as much as I can for someone I don’t know. But that doesn’t keep you from hurting me. And I… I have my reasons to not want to be hurt.”

“You feel vulnerable,” I acknowledged.
