As the days go by, Bob is on my ass about Cassie attending the garden party. Every time he passes my desk, he asks if Iâve already told her about it. I keep saying that we just hadnât gotten around to talking about it since sheâs working on new jokes.
That excuses only flew a few times. By the time Thursday rolled around, Bob pretty much gave me an ultimatum. It was I better call Cassie or else type of thing in so many words.
Thatâs the last straw that broke the poor little travel agentâs back. I finally give in and pick up my phone. Cassieâs number is at the top of my call list so I donât have to look for very long. Itâs one tap and weâre good to go.
It rings. And rings. And rings some more. Until I reach the busy signal.
Cassie doesnât have voicemail for some reason so thereâs no way that I can leave her a message. I glance at the clock on my computer screen. Itâs late enough in the day that she should be awake by now.
The last time we spoke, we left each other in good terms. I expected that if I called her, she would answer. What changed from then and now?
Then I stop myself from engaging into a downward spiral. Surely, her not answering isnât about me. Sheâs probably just busy.
Thatâs it, I tell myself. Sheâs just busy with her act or working out new jokes. When we were at the hotel bar, she told me a little about her process.
When she has a new joke in mind, sheâd write it out in a notebook first. Sheâd look at the language she uses then sheâd edit based on what words are better suited to deliver the joke. She also works on the structure and how the joke is put together.
While she was speaking, I found myself in awe of her. She knew her craft and it was clear from how engaged she was that she was passionate about what she did. Then she moved on to what she called workshopping the joke.
Thatâs when sheâd go early to the club and work out her material in front of no one. She explained that shows usually start from 7 p.m. and could go all the way up to 1 a.m. depending on how many comics come to the club. In her case, since sheâs what they call in the business a headliner, she gets a slot in the club where people actually pay to see her and she gets a percentage of what they as for at the door.
âLike the time when I first saw you perform,â I said at that time. âThey asked me to pay fifty dollars at the door.â
She nodded. âAnd I get a percentage of that.â
It was so interesting to listen to. The dynamics of being a comedian is so foreign to me. I thought it was getting up on stage and speaking for whatever the length of time they give you.
