Nineteen

SSA Wilder’s Office, Criminal Data Analysis Unit; Seattle Field Office

After Astra went home, I hung around the coffee house for a little while longer. I wasn’t ready to go home yet, so I had another cup of coffee, then headed back to the office. I think knowing that Mark wasn’t going to be there waiting for me kept me from going home. Rattling around my empty apartment would have been depressing, so I figured I’d dive back into some work to keep my mind busy.

At the moment, I’m staring at my computer screen. I’ve run the name Claude Rosen through a number of different databases and come up empty. I’ve Googled him. I’ve run a search for this man in different ways and haven’t found a trace of him anywhere. I would have thought if he was ex-NSA, I would have found him in the government databases. But there was nothing. The guy is still a ghost.

That doesn’t make me feel very confident. If there really is a conspiracy and I go out to meet this guy I don’t know, it’s very possible I could end up just like my parents. That thought sends a chill down my spine. But if I don’t meet this guy and he actually does have information to pass on, I’m missing out on a chance to find out who killed my parents and abducted my sister.

I’m at a loss about what to do. But there’s one card I haven’t played yet. I hesitate for a moment but then pick up my phone and punch the speed dial button, then slip my Bluetooth earbud into my ear as the call goes through and begins to ring.

“Blake Wilder, as I live and breathe,” he answers. “And here I thought you forgot all about me. You really fed into my abandonment issues.”

I laugh. “Oh, you have plenty of issues, Pax. Just not abandonment issues.”

“Yeah, alright, that’s true. Sounded good, though.”

“Not nearly as good as you think it did.”

We laugh together for a moment as I lean back in my chair. Paxton Arrington has been a good friend of mine for a while now. We met at an anti-terrorism conference back when he was with the Seattle PD, clicked right away, and we’ve been great friends since then. We’ve bonded over our experiences with loss and grief, as well as our passion for justice. Our bond runs deep. I consider him to be family, rather than just a friend.

Paxton comes from one of the country’s wealthiest and most powerful families. The Arringtons founded what has become one of the largest media conglomerates in the world. Suffice it to say, he’s a child of privilege, with all the snark and arrogance that implies. But after meeting the woman who would become his wife, he dedicated his life to serving others. First with the SPD, and now with his own private investigative firm, a firm that has quickly grown into one of Seattle’s most respected.

For somebody who came from such wealth and privilege, he’s become incredibly down to earth.
