Chapter Fifteen

Rico's truck was just as Kade had left it. He rummaged through the belongings he'd left behind to be sure. The bottles of rations left in his bag made him frown. Those were no good now. He hadn't given any consideration to when or how he would eat next. He'd figure that out later. Right now, he was supposed to be retrieving the truck and meeting the others at his Keeper's house.

Kade wasn't convinced it wasn't a trap. But Thaddeus was the only guidance he had at this point, and he was tired. Tired of fighting, tired of chasing nothing, just tired. His body ached with weariness, his joints stiff after hours of travel. His injuries still pained him, too, though their healing had been substantially accelerated after his taste of the old man's blood.

Not for the first time, he mentally cursed that bit of information that had been withheld through all his years of violent hunts. Despite the severity of his wounds, he suspected they'd be fully healed within a matter of days.

With luck, he'd live that long.

Kade eyed the fuel gauge, worrying his lower lip between his teeth. There was no getting around needing gas. Getting it now meant he'd have it if he needed to run.

Instead of the gas station nearest the airport, he stopped halfway between there and Thaddeus's house, where the lot was well-lit and crowded. It wasn't people he was concerned about, after all, and having more bodies nearby made him harder to spot. He leaned back against the side of the truck, lifted his Stetson and scrubbed a hand through his dark hair.

Travel always left him feeling dirty. Travel interspersed with fights was worse. He didn't know how long it had been since his last shower. He didn't even know what day it was anymore, just that the trip back had taken what felt like eternity. The days all blurred together when he looked back.

He hadn't been able to sleep in the SUV. Sharing close quarters with an unfamiliar hunter had proven to be more than what he could bear. At least at Thaddeus's house, he could barricade himself in a room upstairs and have a small measure of privacy.

The muzzle of a gun pressed between his shoulder blades. “Who would be the rich boy now, huh?”

Kade spun, ready to fight, and halted when he saw Cole's broad grin.

He hadn't even felt the truck shift when the hunter climbed into the bed.

Cole spun the pistol back into its hiding place and spread his hands in a gesture of peace. “You're a hard man to hunt, Colton, but the hat gives you away every time.”

Grunting, Kade adjusted his Stetson. “I'll keep that in mind. Since when are you huntin' me, though?”

“Pretenses,” Cole said. “Had to make things look convincing after I ran afoul of a rival while protecting Felicity.”

Adrenaline burst into his veins at the sound of her name and Kade stood bolt upright. “What?” He couldn't help the note of panic that colored his voice.
