Fourteen

Frank was exiting his SUV in the station parking lot as she pulled up and shut off her engine. She grabbed her black, department-issued rain jacket with Edgewater PD on the back and flipped up the hood. No use walking around all day in damp clothes if she could help it. Frank waited for her, and they walked into the building together, but after the initial good morning exchange, he was silent, lost in his own thoughts. Mila didn’t intrude. She had enough on her mind.

At 6:05 a.m. Captain Bartol and Matt were already in the conference room. The smell of buttery croissants and bitter coffee hung in the air. They exchanged good mornings and Mila took a seat beside Matt’s wheelchair, greeting him with a nod, and pulled out her insulated coffee mug. She poured the dark, steaming liquid into it and then grabbed a still-warm croissant, hoping it would soak up the acid in her stomach.

Mila caught the captain’s eye. “Tell Brigitte thanks for the croissants.”

Captain Bartol offered her a distracted smile. “Will do.”

Brigitte was Captain Bartol’s wife of ten years, though they’d been together for almost twenty. Brigitte was also a former pastry chef and never let them have an early morning meeting without sending something delicious she’d baked. Hopefully, some caffeine and carbs would erase the brain fog Mila was feeling from stress and lack of sleep.

After Mila swallowed a bite, she turned to Matt, whose thick dark hair was still wet from either a shower or the rain. “Great job on getting the deleted information from our vic’s phone. Aiden got the warrant sent to HydeMe last night. Hopefully, they won’t drag their feet.”

He held up his coffee cup with the Edgewater PD logo. “Here’s to a quick response.”

Mila wanted to ask him about how long he thought opening Cara’s private journal would take, but Aiden walked through the door with a cheerful, “Morning, all.” His curls were still damp, and he also had on the department-issued rain jacket over his Edgewater PD polo. “I’ve got a number to harass them as soon as the sun comes up.”

“Morning,” Mila said as he took a seat across from her and reached for the coffee. There were purplish smudges beneath his eyes, too.

“All right. Let’s go through what we have.” Captain Bartol crumpled up her napkin, stood and grabbed a black whiteboard marker. She made a list of things they knew about Cara’s life: Moved to Edgewater four months ago. She wrote “why?” next to that and underlined it twice.

Known Friends: Fayth Gandy, Stew Prescott and Alex Tremble.”

“And Jemma Burns,” Mila said after swallowing a warm mouthful of coffee.

“Right. She wasn’t home when Frank tried to talk to her.” After Captain Bartol added Jemma’s name, she turned to Matt. “You finish the background checks on these people?”

He leaned forward in his wheelchair and tapped on a folder. “Fayth Gandy, Stew Prescott and Alex Tremble are clean. I haven’t got to the pastor’s family yet, though. I’ll get that done this morning.
