Nikki yawned as she turned in to Rory’s driveway. Light streamed from the outbuilding where Rory kept his construction tools and recreational vehicles. He and Mark were constantly tinkering with something, and tonight appeared to be no different. Nikki parked in her usual spot in the garage and headed across the grass. Twilight stretched across the western horizon, trillions of stars already bright in the clear sky. Classic rock music came from the speakers Rory had put in last year. Nikki walked around Mark’s big truck, smiling when she heard Lacey’s voice.

“I got grease on me.”

“That means you put in a good day’s work,” Mark said.

“Mommy!” Lacey raced across the concrete floor, black streaks on her T-shirt and cheeks. “We’re workin’ on the boat.”

Rory and Mark both loved to fish, especially trolling for larger fish along the outer edges of Minnesota’s many lakes. But with Nikki and Lacey in the picture, Rory wanted more room than his regular fishing boat offered, so he and Mark had gone in on a cabin boat. The brothers had been raised to be frugal, and even though they could both afford to buy their own houseboats, they’d elected to buy an older model they could tinker with and “modify.” Nikki could only imagine how fast the thing would go after those two were done with it, and she suspected they’d wind up putting more money into their modifications than they would have if they’d just bought a newer one.

“I see that.” Nikki looked at the pile of discarded carpet and worn-out leather cushions. “You really are gutting her.”

Rory grinned. “Yep. This sucker’s going to be so sweet when we get it done.”

“You think that will happen before the water freezes?” Nikki teased.

Rory and Mark both shot her looks. “Maybe,” Rory said. “But she’s got to be ready, right, Lace?”

“Yep, and I’m going to learn how to drive her.”

Nikki would never understand men’s need to refer to anything with a motor as a female, but she was excited to take the boat out some weekend, whether they fished or not. She just wanted to relax and enjoy the summer.

But not until Abby Walker was found.

“Uncle Mark’s gonna teach me to weld. It’s a skill he learned when he was at Oak Park.”

Lacey didn’t know Mark, whom she adored, had spent twenty years in prison for the murders of Nikki’s parents—a crime Nikki had helped clear him of when she returned to Stillwater.

“Not before we get you eye protection that fits,” Rory said.

Nikki walked over to the carpet and knelt down. The steel-colored material had a tighter weave than regular carpet, and while it smelled like old fish and oil, it wasn’t moldy. Courtney would test Thea’s clothes for particulates, but Nikki wasn’t sure about mold transferring. She was more interested in the different types of carpeting used for cabin boats. “How do you keep the carpet from getting moldy?” she asked. “Water gets into the boat no matter what.”

“It’s water-resistant carpeting, so the fibers are unaffected by moisture,” Rory said.
