Predictably, when we went back into the interview room, Ambrose had Jason Browning clammed up and ready to leave. We contemplated arresting him, but unless the drug test came back positive, or we could tie him to the murder in any way, he’d be out first thing Monday. We all wasted several hours waiting for an available nurse to take the blood sample before letting Browning leave.

Hugo and I were about to spend another thrilling afternoon searching more CCTV and looking into the GPS history from the Garmin taken from Shore Code, when Captain Bradley dropped by the station.

“Progress?” she asked.

We filled her in, putting a slightly more optimistic spin on the situation.

“You sure about cutting Browning loose?” she asked when we were done.

“For now,” Hugo replied. “Looks like they’re the first suspects with opportunity, but we’re yet to establish if they had the means. They’re software engineers, so fabricating metal structures doesn’t immediately jump out as an obvious pastime.”

“As for motive,” I said, completing the three major aspects from which law enforcement viewed a crime, “we again have nothing at this stage, but we’re working on the angle that this might be tied to the drowning in Newport Beach. If it is, we’re dealing with a serial pattern.”

“Okay,” Bradley responded, looking less than okay about what we had. But she looked at her watch before continuing. “You two look whipped. Get out of here. Take an afternoon to recharge and hit it hard in the morning.”

Maybe she felt guilty, as she was only sticking her head in the door for a few minutes, or maybe we did look that crappy. Or I looked like shit, as Hugo’s appearance seemed its usual flawless self to me. Either way, I felt exhausted, and nothing we were about to discover that afternoon would close the case, so we took a few minutes to tidy up, then left.

It was almost one p.m. I drove toward the ocean and considered my options, finally calling my mum.

“Hi, darling,” she answered.

“Have you two had lunch yet?” I asked.

“We were just sitting down to eat now,” she replied. “Can you join us?”

“If that’s okay?” I asked, a polite but superfluous question. Even if they were about to consume the last remnants of food in the house, my mum would race to the shops and buy more rather than say no. Knowing that made me feel special, but she’d also do the same for any friend or family member, so not that special.

“Of course. We’ll see you in a few.”

“Tell her not to hang about,” I heard my dad’s voice in the background. “I’m bloody starving.”

I laughed and hung up. Dad would also welcome anyone to join them in the same scenario, except he wouldn’t race to the grocery store, and would probably have eaten most of the food before the guest arrived.
