C H A P T E R 1 6

CAITLIN

I looked around for Jace’s black Jeep as I pulled into the parking space in front of my condo, but there was no sign of him. I’d lost him in traffic somewhere after that last shop I’d stopped at, but I had still sort of half-expected him to be waiting for me in the parking lot once I made it home.

I gathered my shopping bags and looked down the street again.

Still no Jace.

If I hadn’t had so many bags to carry, I could have fished my phone out of my pants pocket and called him. Not that he needed me to check on him, of course. And not that I was particularly worried…

No, not going to worry.

I did my best to push those thoughts away as I slowly made my way to the front door of my condo, my arms full of bags. Only when I got to the door did I realize the other flaw in my plan to carry half a dozen shopping bags at once.

My house key was still in my pocket right along with my phone.

Silently cursing myself for trying to be cute and minimalist without a purse today, I set down two bags at my feet and started transferring the other ones to one arm so I could at least get to my pocket.

“Damn tight-ass pants,” I muttered as I shifted my weight and tried to retrieve my keys without dropping the rest of my bags.

I was concentrating so hard that I only heard the heavy footsteps behind me at the last minute. A cold, hard hand was on my shoulder, pulling me backward.

“Jace?” I gasped, half-turning in the steely grip to see that it was

definitely not Jace’s arm or body or face sneering down at me. “Help!

Someone— ah.”

A damp cloth was pressed to my face so hard that I was pretty sure my nose was bleeding. The smell was overpowering and my vision blurred as I dropped my bags and felt my legs give out from under me.

I wanted to scream. I wanted to struggle, to fight.

Everything felt heavy and dark, and I could feel myself being half-carried, half-dragged backward as my consciousness began to fade.

I felt my shoe fall off as I landed hard on my ass. A voice I didn’t recognize whispered something, but my brain was so fuzzy that I couldn’t make sense of the words.

There was pressure on my arms, then on my wrists, then my legs.

Then I couldn’t feel anything at all.

I had one last thought as the darkness started to overtake me.

This is it. This is the end. My stalker has found me.

Now I’m going to die.

I tried to open my eyes, but I couldn’t. My eyelids were too heavy and my head was pounding.

Open your eyes.

Open them.

Nope. It wasn’t happening.

Was I dying? Was I already dead?

Could it be possible to be dead and still feel this shitty?

No, probably not.

So, I was most likely still alive, even though I couldn’t
