TWENTY-THREE

Margot was dumping her shitty coffee into the break room sink when her captain appeared. He was like a silent phantom, slinking through the hallways of the station; he would always pop up when she least expected and least wanted to see him.

Captain Gordon Tate was in his early sixties, certainly beginning to court the idea of retirement, and not shy about telling people when he was sick of their bullshit. He was a handsome man, as men in their sixties go, with a rugged complexion that seemed better suited to someone working on a Montana cattle ranch than behind the desk of a San Francisco police department. His formerly dark hair was now almost entirely silver, and his blue eyes were sharp and attentive.

Under normal circumstances, Margot liked Captain Tate, but she also knew that the last thing any detective wanted on a day like this was to have their captain pop up like the Ghost of Christmas past.

“Detective Phalen. A word?” He inclined his head in the direction of his office and Margot’s stomach sank. This definitely wasn’t going to be good if it was an in-private conversation.

She passed by Wes as she and Tate moved toward the captain’s office. She gave her partner a pleading save me look, but knew it was pointless, there was no one who could intervene in whatever was about to happen.

Margot shut the door of the office behind her and sank into a chair facing the captain’s desk. The office was dark, filled with old wood paneling that had likely been up since the seventies, and the walls were decorated with little bits of Captain Tate’s professional history. There was a letter of commendation from the mayor, framed photos of the captain with various political figures, and a framed service medal.

On his desk was a photo of his family—his wife Nadine and their two grown sons, Henry and Jeremy along with their wives who Margot didn’t know—and his mug said World’s Best Grandpa.

Margot chose to focus on the mug, because it was hard to imagine that anyone drinking from it might be about to ruin her entire day. Then she noticed the folder for the Genesis Covington investigation on his desk and her stomach managed to sink even further than before.

“Great work on the Clark case. That was a quick closure, we needed that.”

She gave a tight nod. “He pretty much started spilling his guts the minute we got him into a room. It was open-and-shut.”

“The ADA was pleased with your professionalism on covering all the bases. You know that makes their jobs easier.”

Margot, who had never much cared for anyone from the district attorney’s office, gave a half shrug as her way of acknowledging the compliment. If it meant that someone who was guilty would get justice, then great.

“I didn’t bring you in here to talk about that case, though.”

“No, sir, I suspected as much.”

He gave her a thin smile and tapped his finger on the folder in front of him.
