They went back to Harcourt Street. The nightshift desk sergeant informed Jessie a bundle of files had been delivered by a military policeman and had been left in the conference room.

‘You two look like death warmed up,’ the sarge said as the pair trudged past him.

‘We’ve been on for close to twenty-four hours, and it’ll be a few more before we get to clock off,’ Jessie said.

She was dead on her feet, and Seamus looked as if he was ready to curl up in a corner and pass out.

‘Tough case, I take it,’ the sarge commiserated.

‘The toughest,’ Seamus said.

‘These will be the files from Glynn,’ Jessie said as she unpacked them and laid them out on the table.

‘I have to tell you, Jessie, this case is driving me a bit crazy,’ Seamus said as he pulled up a chair.

‘I hear you. It’s always awful when kids are involved.’

‘Did I tell you I’m seeing someone?’

Jessie threw him a look. ‘You’re like… dating?’

‘I don’t know if I’d call it that.’

Jessie put the last file on the desk and sat down opposite her partner. ‘Well let’s take a moment and turn this over – you’ve met a person you like.’

‘It’s a girl, yes.’

‘Okay. So you’ve met a girl you like. You’ve been out with her more than once?’

‘We’ve been out three times.’

‘This is where – in Cork?’

‘No. She’s based here in Dublin.’

‘And you like her?’

‘She’s great, yeah. I really like her.’

‘Have you told her you like her?’

‘Well I… well not in so many words.’

‘How many words did you use?’

Seamus looked a bit perplexed at that. ‘We haven’t really talked about that side of things at all.’

‘Do you think she likes you?’

‘I think so. Like I mean, the third time we went out, she kind of asked me.’

‘Probably a good sign,’ Jessie agreed. ‘I’m going to surmise from the fact you’re telling me about her that you’re planning on making it a long-term arrangement?’

‘I’d like to, yeah.’

‘Do then. You don’t need my blessing.’

‘I know but… well we’re in each other’s lives so much. I spend more time with you than I do anyone else.’

Jessie grinned. ‘I’m your partner. That’s a relationship only another cop would understand. What does this young lady do?’

‘She’s a schoolteacher. Senior infants – so like six, seven years old.’

‘Your mum was a teacher, wasn’t she?’

‘Yes.’

‘And does Katie Keneally know about this girl who’s turned her son’s head?’

‘Not yet, no.’

‘I’d love to be a fly on the wall during that conversation.’

Seamus and his mother had a very close relationship. Jessie often thought that a woman had not yet been born who would meet the standards Katie would set for a mate for her beloved only son.

‘The thing is, Jessie, Christina, she has a little girl. She’s younger than Rosie by three years, but it really hit me the other day that if anything was to happen to Steffie, Christina would be inconsolable. I mean, I think it’d kill her. And I’ve only just met the wee thing, but I already care about her.
