Crazy how a night full of monsters in your head can turn into the best night’s sleep you’ve had in months. It’s all because of the girl by my side. I smile, eyes still closed, and wrap my arm around her. Only, my arm sinks into the down comforter.

I open my eyes to see that Bella is not there. My mind immediately goes to the worst possible scenario, and I shoot up to a sitting position. That’s when I see her. Sitting at a desk in the corner of the room, blinds still closed and barely a wink of light.

“Whatcha doing over there?”

She spins around in the chair, my phone in her hand. “Trying to get into this thing. What’s the passcode?”

I tear the blanket off me and walk toward her, my morning wood greeting her through the fabric of my boxers.

“That depends on what you need it for.” I press my palms to the desk, caging her between my arms, and I kiss the top of her head.

Worried eyes look up at me. “Cal, please just let me call my parents.”

“We’ve been over this, Bella. It’s not safe.”

I can feel the tension building between us, and I’m trying really hard to avoid another argument. But she can’t make contact with anyone. Not yet.

“Dammit, Cal!” She pushes me back and gets up. “I want to know that Mark is safe.” She’s full-on yelling, hands shaking and tears welling in her eyes. “I want to see how Lucy is doing after the news of Trent’s death. I want to talk to my fucking family!”

I take a deep breath, contemplating the best approach here.

“Give me my phone,” I finally say, holding my hand out.

She slaps it in my palm, curses, and storms out of the room.

A quick call to Anders, and hopefully, we can come to an agreement that works for both of us.

“Hey,” I say when he picks up on the first ring, “I need you to do something for me.”

“Anything, Boss. What is it?”

"Go to the brother’s hospital room and call me when you get there.”

Anders laughs, though there is nothing comical about this situation. “He’s at NYC General. I’m back at Cori Cove.”

My teeth grind. “Did I ask where the fuck you were? Do it. Now.”

I end the call and slam my phone down on the desk. There is nothing I hate more than an employee who questions a job I give. I pay Anders damn good money, and I do it because he’s the best.

The sound of a door slamming has me hauling ass out of the bedroom. “Bella,” I holler, searching the suite frantically. “This isn’t funny, Bella. Where the hell are you?” I open and close closets, the bathroom door. “Fuck!”

She’s gone.

And she took my damn key card with her.
