Sylvan is more complex than I gave him credit for. Sure, he has a spotted past, but so do I. While I didn’t throw myself into the arms of another to numb my pains—I devoted my entire being to the only thing I knew.

Hunting monsters. Dredging up more of those unpleasant emotions deep inside myself.

Fleeting thoughts of retiring to Arcadia dance through my mind, but I wouldn’t know what to do with myself if I knew I would never hunt again. It’s so much of my identity that I’m nothing without it. It’s the only thing I know how to do. I can’t make a home like Jenna has because I have no idea how to cook or clean. I could never work a regular job because I don’t have any of the necessary skills. Hell, I only know how to sew so I can stitch up my wounds.

Everything I was ever taught prepared me for monster hunting, but I don’t know how to do anything else.

Maybe not even love properly.

I raise the beanbag gun and fire—missing Sylvan by a mile because my thoughts are so distracting.

I promised him that I wouldn’t train outside the perimeter at night, and in return he agreed to play the part of a moving target. He’s a great one, too. Fast and lithe despite his size.

“Missed me,” he says in a singsong voice. Shuffling in a little victory dance, he winks at me before bolting off again.

He’s also a great target because it’s incredibly tempting to hit him.

I smirk at the thought, raise the gun, aim, fire.

“Ow!” he exclaims, rubbing the spot I struck without ever slowing his pace. He moves faster than almost anything I’ve ever hunted, putting more and more distance between us until I think he’s about to run home.

Sylvan darts around, then suddenly charges in my direction, daring me to strike him.

Normally I’d go for the head, but I shoot the beanbags at his stomach instead. It doesn’t slow him down any, but I never really expected it to.

All at once he’s on me and we’re tumbling to the ground, but I don’t hit it hard, rather I fall on his chest and then he rolls to pin me against the sprinkling of snow on the ground.

“Gotcha,” he says, giving a chuckle as he pins my hands over my head.

I should be annoyed, I should fight back and prove that I could best him, but he’s so strong.

And though my pride aches, another part of me loves this new position we’re in.

Sylvan gazes down at me with half-lidded eyes that say he wants the same as me.

I’d like to think we’ve gotten closer over these last several weeks, that maybe I got through to him, made him understand that it’s okay to let himself be happy.

That he deserves it, and I want everything he has to offer.

Those bright blue eyes stare down at me like they can see through me, and he lowers some of his weight on top of me.
