Actually, Ashleigh had to give him credit. The idea wasn’t without merit. Still, she wasn’t prepared to agree that easily.

“Your sister hates me,” she said instead.

Now it was Chase’s turn to be shocked. “What are you talking about?” Then he nodded like she’d given him a clue. “Oh. That’s why she left so abruptly. Wait. What happened in the bathroom?”

Ashleigh replayed her interaction with Jordyn, but to her annoyance, Chase laughed heartily.

She scowled. “It wasn’t funny.”

His laughter died down. “I’m sorry. I was just picturing Jordyn getting angry—which, believe me, I’ve seen plenty of times. But jumping to my defense? That’s priceless.” He glanced Ashleigh’s way, his lips quirking up. “You have to admit, it was sweet of her to want to protect me from you.”

“Protect you from me?” That annoyed her even more than his laughter did. He was the one who’d come up with the entire scheme.

He nodded, evidently missing her mood completely. “Yeah. You can be pretty dangerous, in case you didn’t know.”

Her eyebrows rose. “Really. How so?”

As he looked her way, his expression changed to one of caution. Guess he’d finally caught on that she didn’t find this funny, although she actually kind of did. She just wasn’t going to make it easy for him.

“Uh,” he stammered, “you know, the way you’re so beautiful and intelligent and selfless, yet you’ve drawn a bright red line between us, keeping me away.”

That made no sense, but she didn’t care because she was stuck on his description of her as beautiful, intelligent, and selfless. Was that really what he thought about her or was he trying to butter her up to get her to go along with his plan? “Uh-huh.”

“What? You disagree?”

Laughter bubbled up her throat. She couldn’t help it. This was all so ridiculous.

Chase pulled off of the road and parked his Lamborghini, which was when Ashleigh noticed that from their vantage point they could see many houses adorned with Christmas lights. Some twinkled while others stayed a steady red, green, blue, and yellow. Others had white or clear lights and many trees were wrapped in lights as well.

Chase had left the car running, which pumped heat into the small space. Nice and cozy, and with the festive atmosphere, Ashleigh relaxed.

Chase reached behind Ashleigh’s seat to the small shelf-like area behind her and retrieved a dark brown wicker basket with a lid, setting the basket on his lap.

“What’s that?”

Lifting the basket’s lid, he grinned. “Thought you might like some refreshments on our drive.”

Curious, she watched as he took out a thermos and two mugs and then a small box. He opened the box, revealing four beautifully decorated Christmas cookies. He handed her a napkin and offered her a cookie. “Got them from Sprinkles of Joy. Gage boxed them up himself.”

Ashleigh smiled. Leave it to Chase to use a sweet treat to break through her frustration. He was familiar with her sweet tooth—something she’d been trying to overcome but hadn’t had a lot of success with. She thought about the treats he used to bring her, just because.
