Keesha stood up as the siblings talked.

“I’ll be right back.” She looked around.

“You take that elevator or the stairs up one flight and you’ll see the loo,” Brianna told Keesha.

The loo. Keesha imagined herself telling Brianna she was going to the john. The thought made her smile.

Brianna’s incredibly proper.

Keesha went up the stairs. She used the restroom, washed her hands, and applied some lipstick. As she was about to leave she felt her phone buzz. If she had guessed that the text or call was Christopher then she’d have had a ninety percent chance of being right.

He hadn’t given up texting her. And the calling had turned into several messages since Keesha refused to answer his calls. Keesha had listened to a few of these messages but they were the same sloppy excuses and promises he’d already been giving. She deleted it then began deleting them all before listening to them. She hadn’t bothered to tell him not to call or not to text.

She hoped he’d get what her silence meant. There was no chance they would get back together.

He’d sent his message by sleeping with someone else; she would send hers by never talking to him again. Keesha looked at herself in the mirror one last time then made her way back down the stairs. Their table was just around a corner and as Keesha approached she realized that they were talking about her. She couldn’t walk in on them talking about her. She turned to go back and come again with a bit more noise until a few words stopped her.

“…You’re going to lose the account because you don’t have a wife or a girlfriend.” The voice belonged to Brianna.

Keesha wished she had heard the beginning of their conversation.

Donovan said something Keesha couldn’t hear. She pulled in closer to the wall and tried to tune her ears in their direction.

“No, the company has been sending a slutty vibe since dad bonked that prostitute. Donovan you need to do this, don’t you? If you can have a pretty, competent woman at your side then maybe Monroe Enterprises won’t look like one long sex party.”

“It’s amazing how the stock dropped after that story broke,” Donovan said.

Keesha walked a few steps toward the elevator away from the table.

What did they mean?

Was Donovan wife hunting or girlfriend hunting to put on a good show for Paul? Or for the media? Is that why he’d invited her to an event with so many cameras around? One where she would be on display for Paul and Ingrid to see?

Her heart hammered. She brushed a hand over her outfit and tested out a smile. Then she made her way briskly back to the table holding her head up high.

“Dessert?” Brianna asked her as soon as Keesha sat.

Keesha could feel Donovan’s eyes on her but she didn’t meet them. She took the last swig of her wine instead. She had become confused. Was anything they’d shared real or was Donovan on games.

“No, thank you. I’m actually feeling a bit tired.
