Laila swam up slowly to consciousness. In her dreams, she had been fourteen again, alone in her basement room, trying to do her homework as she listened to the sounds of the Pinsersâher latest foster familyâmoving around above her, having family time as they watched TV. She knew, because she was smart about human behavior even back then, that they werenât deliberately trying to exclude her. She could leave her basement room at any time and climb the stairs to join them. But the fact that they had not invited her burned. Torn between wanting to be included and wanting to be invited, she stayed where she was. âI donât want to,â she said to herself and resumed concentrating on the textbook in front of her. The words jumped around on the page, and then the warmth came again.
The same warmth that had woken her in the first place. It was Marcâs hand on her shoulder. He chuckled. âYou donât want to? Aye. All right then, you can stay sleeping as long as you want, mo leannan.â
Lailaâs eyes flew open, and the last traces of the dreamâs heartbreak ebbed away when she realized Marc was asking her something. âSay that again?â she mumbled, rolling over onto her back.
âI was just wondering if youâd like to join us for breakfast,â he said, gesturing towards the open door of his private deck. Outside, Grayson was already safely ensconced in his high chair, busily attending to his chopped banana. It was a little embarrassing to realize that she must have dozed straight through both Jeanie dropping off the baby and someone delivering a breakfast tray, but she really had slept like a rock.
Marc held a small bowl in his hand, and catching her gaze, he explained. âI thought we might try him with some cereal this morning. But I didnât want to get started without checking with you in case you wanted to be there for his first bite.â
The warmth of inclusion, the knowledge that he had thought of her and came to get her so she wouldnât miss out⦠It was like heâd peered into her head to watch the sadness of her dream, and then set out to do the opposite.
Her body still tingled and throbbed with the aftereffects of their lovemaking. But it was this moment, more than any moment theyâd shared last night that made her think, This is real. I donât know how I got so lucky that this is actually real.
It was real, and she was falling for him.
âGive me a minute,â she mumbled, and started looking around her in confusion.
Marc laughed again. âI set a robe right there for you.â He pointed to the neatly folded bundle in the middle of the bed. âThough I would not mind the sight of you in the altogether, Grayson might get a bit confused.â
Laila laughed as she shrugged her way into the robe. Marc cast a mournful glance at her chest as she tugged it closed around her breasts.
