Chapter 7: Dance of Hearts

Jolene

Jolene paced the waiting room outside of Alora’s office as she anxiously awaited the outcome of Titus’s reunion with his family.

“He’s going to be fine,” Alora assured quietly. “He’s one of the lucky ones, you know.”

Jolene glanced up in surprise. She hadn’t heard the lovely CEO enter the waiting room. Well, technically, she was still standing in the doorway of her office. “I want to believe you,” Jolene shook her head, “but some of the most dangerous criminals on the continent are targeting his family right now.” As someone who’d lost her fiancé to cancer, it was less than thrilling to discover her new boyfriend was walking around with a set of crosshairs on his forehead. “How does that make him lucky?”

Alora smiled. “Because they found each other, which means they have a chance at developing a relationship that is meaningful and real. A lot of adopted children never get that chance.”

Jolene stopped nibbling on her lower lip at the abrupt reminder that Alora was adopted. “Did you,” she asked hesitantly, wondering if it was appropriate to even ask such a question, “that is, did you ever—”

“No,” Alora’s voice was low and firm, “and I’ll never get that chance, because I was an orphan.” She didn’t elaborate on the circumstances leading up to her orphaned state, and Jolene didn’t have the heart to pry any further.

“I’m not sharing this with you as a grab for sympathy,” Alora hastened to add, “I just want you to have something to think about besides your fears.”

Jolene made a face. “Is it that obvious?”

“To someone who’s had to spend the last several months fighting to protect and defend everyone and everything she cares for? Yes.” She stepped into the waiting room, exuding such iron-clad assurance that Jolene had a hard time remembering how fragile and pale she’d lain in her hospital bed not too many months ago. “Have you told Titus about your own father yet?”

Jolene blinked in shock. She’d not mentioned her father’s deteriorating condition to anyone. It was one of those super private, need-to-know things. “How did you—?”

“I know things, Jolene, especially about the people I employ.”

Well, that’s some fine writing for you. “What did you do?” she spluttered. “Tap my phone? Run a background check?” All of a sudden, working for a billionaire felt a whole lot more daunting than it had when she’d first accepted their offer of employment. It made her wonder what other freedoms she’d inadvertently forfeited in the lengthy contract she hadn’t bothered to read before signing.

“Of course not.” Alora looked indignant. “If you must know, I had one of our P.I.s follow you for a few days.”

Oh, that’s so much better…not! Jolene scowled at her, feeling utterly exposed and humiliated. “Please. Just tell me it wasn’t Titus.”

Alora snorted. “It wasn’t Titus, and quit looking at me like I kicked your puppy dog. Of course I did a little digging into your background before I invited you into my household. You, of all people, should understand why.
