Chapter Seven

“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.” Tiny was the first to react when Jake shared the news of what he’d come home to with the other members of the Rebel Sons. “Cain and his boys have some goddamned nerve even setting foot on your property after…”

Jake put a hand on his friend’s shoulder. He knew how much Tiny had cared about his father, but was worried that opening those old wounds might result in a confrontation with the Vipers that nobody wanted.

“At the very least, a group of us needs to pay Cain a visit, let him know this shit won’t be tolerated,” came a voice from the back of the room, and Jake acknowledged the speaker with a nod before disagreeing.

“I understand, believe me,” Jake said. “And part of me wants to go over there and shake him up, let him know that what happened to the guy I found roughing up Carrie can happen to any of them if we catch them within in a mile of any of our houses.” He paused. “But the other part of me thinks Cain already knows this, and this was just an attempt to make keeping Carrie under my protection was more trouble than it’s worth.”

“Maybe it is.”

The room murmured in reaction to the unexpected comment, especially given its source. Finn was standing against one wall, his arms crossed. He’d listened without speaking as Jake described the vandalism to his home. Now he turned, addressing the gathering rather than speaking directly to Jake.

“When Jake decided to put this girl under his protection, I agreed. I even encouraged it. But in light of this, I’m starting to think I should have insisted he put her on that bus like he’d originally planned. Yeah, this could be Cain blustering. But it could also be a shot across the bow.”

The members of the Rebel Sons were murmuring louder now.

“Hold up.” Jake raised his hands and they fell silent. “First of all, it was my decision,” he said, shooting a look at Finn. “It wouldn’t have matter if Finn had insisted or not. I’m my father’s son and I know I couldn’t have packed a girl like Carrie off after what she’d been through. The possibility that they’d have tracked her down was too great. It still is.”

“Okay,” Finn said. “Then tell us all what’s riskier for this club? Having Cain possibly track down a girl who means nothing to us, or having Cain start targeting more members of this club, or our families, just because you’re intent on keeping her?”

For the second time in as many days, Jake found himself at serious odds with the man who’d taken over the club after his father’s death.

“She may not mean anything to you, Finn, but she means something to me,” Jake said.

“What the hell does that mean?” Finn’s expression grew dark. “You just fucking met this goddamned girl.”

“What the hell does it matter if he just met her?” Tiny stepped up. “I fell in love with my Mary Lou the moment I laid eyes on her thirty years ago.
