Chapter Eleven
Henry
Natalieâs tears made my chest ache. It was a physical pain like no other and I wanted to run as far and as fast as I could just to get away from it. But I couldnât. She was crying because of me, and Iâd sooner die than let her down again.
Scooping her into my arms, I carried her back to the couch. We were dripping wet, but I didnât give a shit. Pulling the blanket across the seat, I sat down, cuddling her in my lap.
âBaby, when youâre ready, you need to tell me whatâs wrong,â I said softly. âDid I hurt you?â
She sniffed, an indelicate sound that made me hide a smile, then said, âI feel absolutely amazing. That was the best sex ever, and I couldnât ask for a more perfect partner.â
âThenâ¦â I cast about for something to say. âWhy the hell are you crying?â
Laughing through her tears, she shook her head. âI have no idea. Isnât that the dumbest thing youâve ever heard?â
âSugar drop?â Using a corner of the blanket, I wiped her face. Iâd have to get a few towels sooner or later, and weâd need to clean up our toys, but all that could wait.
âMaybe.â Her eyes twinkled. âDo you remember what your mom used to say about emotional old women?â
âUgh.â I lowered my face into her hair and shuddered. âNope. I blocked that out on the advice of, you know, everyone. Besides, youâre not old.â
In a remarkable impression of my mother, she said, âYou better get yourself pregnant before you hitââ
ââ¦The Change,â we finished together. âPatent pending.â
Natalieâs laughter faded and she laid her head on my chest. âShe meant well.â
âYeah, but Iâm sorry for all the times she made you feel like a failure. Youâre not.â
âShe wasnât so bad. I mean, I get it. She really wanted grandkids, and youâre an only child. At least I have nieces and nephews to keep my parents occupied.â
âTrue.â I tugged her hair to make her look at me. âAre you sure youâre okay?â
âYes, Iâm sure.â She kissed me, a quick brush of her lips against mine. âIâm going to dry off and try to do something with my hair. Maybe we can watch a movie later.â
âAnd figure out whatâs for supper. I have a bunch of frozen stuff from one of those online meal services.â
âNice. Whatâs on the menu?â Her bare feet left wet footprints on the concrete. Iâd really have to get carpet installed down hereâespecially for the winter.
I found my phone and pulled up the order. âChicken Marsala, steak Diane, salmon Florentine, pad Thaiââ
âIâll take that. Are there egg rolls?â
âNo, sorry, but I can order some if you want. It only takes a fewâ¦â I jumped to my feet and raced up the stairs. I knew exactly what we were having for supper.
âWhere are you going?â She came out of the bathroom, a towel wrapped around her as she pulled a comb through her hair.
âBe right back!â
I raced upstairs and skidded on the kitchen floor, nearly wiping out against the refrigerator as I yanked open the freezer.
