Chapter Eleven

Henry

Natalie’s tears made my chest ache. It was a physical pain like no other and I wanted to run as far and as fast as I could just to get away from it. But I couldn’t. She was crying because of me, and I’d sooner die than let her down again.

Scooping her into my arms, I carried her back to the couch. We were dripping wet, but I didn’t give a shit. Pulling the blanket across the seat, I sat down, cuddling her in my lap.

“Baby, when you’re ready, you need to tell me what’s wrong,” I said softly. “Did I hurt you?”

She sniffed, an indelicate sound that made me hide a smile, then said, “I feel absolutely amazing. That was the best sex ever, and I couldn’t ask for a more perfect partner.”

“Then…” I cast about for something to say. “Why the hell are you crying?”

Laughing through her tears, she shook her head. “I have no idea. Isn’t that the dumbest thing you’ve ever heard?”

“Sugar drop?” Using a corner of the blanket, I wiped her face. I’d have to get a few towels sooner or later, and we’d need to clean up our toys, but all that could wait.

“Maybe.” Her eyes twinkled. “Do you remember what your mom used to say about emotional old women?”

“Ugh.” I lowered my face into her hair and shuddered. “Nope. I blocked that out on the advice of, you know, everyone. Besides, you’re not old.”

In a remarkable impression of my mother, she said, “You better get yourself pregnant before you hit—”

“…The Change,” we finished together. “Patent pending.”

Natalie’s laughter faded and she laid her head on my chest. “She meant well.”

“Yeah, but I’m sorry for all the times she made you feel like a failure. You’re not.”

“She wasn’t so bad. I mean, I get it. She really wanted grandkids, and you’re an only child. At least I have nieces and nephews to keep my parents occupied.”

“True.” I tugged her hair to make her look at me. “Are you sure you’re okay?”

“Yes, I’m sure.” She kissed me, a quick brush of her lips against mine. “I’m going to dry off and try to do something with my hair. Maybe we can watch a movie later.”

“And figure out what’s for supper. I have a bunch of frozen stuff from one of those online meal services.”

“Nice. What’s on the menu?” Her bare feet left wet footprints on the concrete. I’d really have to get carpet installed down here—especially for the winter.

I found my phone and pulled up the order. “Chicken Marsala, steak Diane, salmon Florentine, pad Thai—”

“I’ll take that. Are there egg rolls?”

“No, sorry, but I can order some if you want. It only takes a few…” I jumped to my feet and raced up the stairs. I knew exactly what we were having for supper.

“Where are you going?” She came out of the bathroom, a towel wrapped around her as she pulled a comb through her hair.

“Be right back!”

I raced upstairs and skidded on the kitchen floor, nearly wiping out against the refrigerator as I yanked open the freezer.
