After that it’s dinnertime. We’re wearing our pyjamas already. We’ve combed our hair one hundred times. We smell like roses because we put cream all over us after the bath, like ladies. But I can also smell dinner.

What if it’s brussel sprouts, or pink fish with bones, or green salad? Things I don’t like. I’m a little nervous all of a sudden, because at other people’s houses you’re not allowed to complain. What if it’s brussel sprout salad? I’ll come out in spots if I have to eat that.

‘Olive,’ I whisper, ‘what are we having for dinner?’

Olive goes on a mission of discovery. ‘Lentil soup. Do you like it?’

‘Well, it’s much better than brussel sprouts.’ I don’t say I would have preferred peanut butter sandwiches, because that would be rude.

At dinner, I watch Max to see if he suspects his pyjamas have been stolen. But Max is busy boasting about the Magpies, which is his football team. My dad barracks for the Tigers. I just barrack for me and the small creatures, which I do like to rescue whenever I can. It’s important to stand up for small things. My mum says it’s also important to eat vegetables, and to be kind. I eat nearly all my lentil soup, and I don’t tell Max that his football team is a dud, because I’m trying to be kind.
