President Ezra Taft Benson urged single parents to “counsel with your priesthood leaders. Let them know of your needs and wants.”22 Pride often keeps single parents from speaking up, even in desperate circumstances. One mother commented:

In retrospect, I had more flexibility than I realized. I had a tremendous support system as a single parent. In fact, if I had been injured in an accident or had a disabling disease, many people from my extended family and from my ward family would have come to my aid. I had a veritable army of people ready to take care of me... [who] had specifically covenanted to be part of my support system. But I was proud and determined to survive on my own.23

Most bishops, home teachers, youth leaders, Relief Society presidents, and visiting teachers, although happy to provide help, may not be sensitive to the specific needs of single-parent families. Rather than feeling neglected or annoyed, single parents can help teach, inform, and sensitize their Church leaders. Help them do their jobs better by sharing in detail the needs of each member of the family and of the family in general. This is an ongoing process of sharing, requesting, reminding, reassessing, reassuring, repenting, and forgiving.
