Chapter twelve

Lilith

“We should have caught up to them by now, Eli.” The further away from Hell we stray, the weaker I become. It’s as if my inner core is changing. The hate and spite are fading, being replaced by positive energy, the thought that what I’ve been doing since arriving in Hell is inherently wrong. But I know I’m not here by free will or choice or whatever the man above wants to call it. I was sent here despite everything I was meant to do up there. Why waste the time up there if this was my ultimate punishment?

“We should rest,” Eli says. “We’ve been walking for hours, and I know you’re becoming as weak as me.” He goes to the water and starts to dip his hand, jerking it back and turning his head. “The souls are gone. The water’s clear.”

“Why are you here, Eli?” I stand over him, motherlike, studying his eyes, digging deep into his soul. That’s where the answers lay. “At first, I thought I was sent to Hell because I failed at something. But I didn’t fail.” I walk away and pace in a large circle. “I know that now. You can’t succeed at something where you were destined to fail.”

Eli dips his hand in the water and drinks. “Wow.” He dips his hand and drinks again, glancing back, hoping my mind has moved onto something else. “You should try it.” He stands, knowing I won’t. “You want a philosophical conversation about the validity of Hell and why we are here. I’ve always assumed I fucked up somehow in the Above World, and this was my prize. Play stupid games and win stupid prizes.”

“So, you accept this fate.”

“As opposed to what? Living forever in the Above World?” Eli chuckles. “It’s almost as bad as it is down here.”

“You came from there,” I say.

“But I have no recollection of being there.” He shrugs. He’s accepted Hell as if there’s no other choice. Is there? “There is nothing above the Above World because I’ve never been there, and I don’t know anyone who has. Does it even exist?”

“It’s the alternative to here,” I say.

“That may be, but this,” he holds out his hands from his sides and looks around, “is my reality. Why dwell on something that will never be?”

“The River of Second Chances,” I say. “It has given us an alternative to what we’ve had for so long.”

“Has it.” He chuckles and looks around at the trees and rivers. “Nothing really matters, does it? We’ve simply moved from chaos—in Hell proper—to quiet chaos—the Wastelands.” I turn away and walk to the second riverbank. “Look, Lilith, I gave up hope a long time ago. I found it easier to accept than to question.” He puts his hands on my shoulders.

“We should have found Dominic,” I say. “I’m worried.”

“You’ve let goodness cloud your evil ways, Lilith.” Mavka steps into the clear and waves her hand. The trees behind her buckle and collapse before coming together to form a throne.
