Investigators are puzzled about a motive in the shooting death of an Ohio motorcyclist on Interstate 80 in Jasper County. Agents of the Iowa Bureau of Criminal Investigation said yesterday that the death of James Bailey, 32, of Mentor, Ohio, may have been a random shooting.

However, they said that was only a possibility and other leads would be pursued also.

Even if the Ohio Angel’s death seemed downplayed, messes like this were adding up, funneling the bikers’ share of the decade further and further into the large net of RICO and persistent police pressure.

The real meaning of that little tagline of “other leads would be pursued also” had already started to translate into open season.

Shortly before the shooting of James Bailey, four members of the Vagos Motorcycle Club were convicted in New Mexico of the mutilation murder of college student William Velten. Vagos brothers Richard Greer, Ronald Keine, Clarence Smith, and Thomas Gladish would spend seventeen months on death row.

The problem here was that they were innocent.

Their case was in the appeals process when Kerry Rodney Lee, ironically an informant for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), had some sort of epiphany and confessed to the murder.
