Chapter 49

His arms were bound behind him, and he was strapped to a chair that was bolted to the floor. His eyes were swollen and his face battered, bloodied and bruised, but he was clearly a powerful man because, despite Tom and Jerry’s best efforts, he was still smirking when The Broker entered the basement.

“What have you found out so far?” asked The Broker.

“Not much, boss,” replied Tom. “We know he works for Ruiz, but he said that as if it was a threat rather than a confession.” The Broker noticed both his men had raw knuckles. He looked at the man in the chair, who spat some blood on the floor towards The Broker.

“Why were you at the professor’s apartment? If you tell me, we’ll make it painless, because you know this will only end one way, don’t you? We have Nembutal, so you can fall asleep and never wake up, or we have a baseball bat. The end result is the same, either way. It’s your choice.” The man didn’t blink or flinch; he just stared at The Broker with the same smirk on his face.

“As you wish,” said The Broker, and he then nodded to his men. From a dimmed corner of the basement, Jerry retrieved the baseball bat. From a table in the other corner, Tom grabbed a handheld iron mallet. As Jerry produced swishing sounds from repeated practice swings, Tom brought the mallet down hard on the man’s right shoulder. The man suppressed an anguished cry and then refocused his stare on The Broker, who impassively gazed back before nodding once. The mallet crashed into the man’s shoulder again, breaking skin and bone in a bloody explosion. The man couldn’t suppress his cry of pain this time, but he seemed to quickly control his emotions and stared at The Broker with gritted teeth and a glare. The Broker waited a couple of seconds before he signalled another blow, with another single nod of his head. This time, the man cried out in unadulterated pain.

“This can stop,” he said to the man as he held his hand up to indicate Tom and Jerry should wait. “I just want you to answer a few simple questions, and all this pain and suffering will end.” The man hung his head as if thinking about his options before he looked up with disdain in his eyes.

“You don’t understand; if I tell you anything, Ruiz will kill my family. You think you are a sick fuck? You are nothing compared to him.”

“But if you tell me what I need to know, how will he find out?”

“Because I am the only one that he has given the information to. He is clever as well as brutal. No matter what you do to me, my wife and children are my priority. I will never talk.” He hung his head again as he awaited his fate. Although The Broker was a hardened criminal, the other side of his life meant he could relate to this man’s predicament.
