Chapter 20

Live Life In The Fast Lane

Rosie had been drifting off to sleep on her bed, the exhaustion of the past twenty-four hours taking its toll, when there was a knock at her door.

Though she’d had Khristann knock on her door more times than she could count, and once or twice had Jakob do it too, something about this particular knock was different.

Softer.

She sat up on her bed and ran a hand through her hair to try and tame it into some form of presentable. Straightening her outfit, she cleared her throat as she pulled open the door.

Of all the people she’d thought could be visiting her in the dank corridor of the hotel, Kit’s apprentice, Hud, hadn’t made the list.

“Hi.” His young voice squeaked just a little.

“Hud?”

Rosie cocked her head slightly as she took him in, a frown marring her brow. How in Aakla’s name had he found his way down here? How had he found her room?

“You look shocked to see me,” he surmised as if his presence in the staff corridor wasn’t anything unusual. He seemed confused at her confusion.

“How did you find your way down here? Are you all right?”

She stepped out of her room and tugged the door closed behind her, embarrassed for him to see her extremely humble abode.

“Standard hotel practice says the kitchens and other staff amenities are in the basement,” he said, sounding more like Kitty than a ten-year-old boy. It almost made Rosie want to smile. “I’ve been in enough fancy hotels to know that the lowest corridor in the building is usually where you’ll find the person you need. There was a very helpful chef in the kitchens who steered me in your direction.”

Rosie’s lips twitched.

“Was his name Khristann?”

Hud waved in a dismissive gesture. “I didn’t bother to get his name.”

Rosie all-out cackled.

“You sound just like Kit. Did you know that?”

He smirked in a wolfish, youthful way that only young boys could manage to get away with, and the spell of arrogance was broken.

“She’s taught me a lot. Like how to change the way I’m speaking based on the company I’m keeping. More formal, articulated speech gives off a superior and detached aura. It gives people the impression that you don’t need to ask for what you want. You can take it if you’d like, but you’re giving them the courtesy of asking first.”

Rosie’s grin grew until her cheeks hurt.

Who was this audacious boy?

“And what do you want from me for you to be using your superior and detached aura? You can just ask if you need something. It’s my job to help you out this weekend, no personality changes needed.”

His posture relaxed a little, and he held his hands out by his sides, gesturing to the corridor around them.

“I’m bored,” he whined, instantly becoming the child he truly was. “I have to wait for the welds to settle on my latest project, so I have nothing to do before this stupid dinner we have to go to.”

Rosie had several questions, including how he had a welder in his hotel suite, but decided that it wasn’t important.
