Chapter Fourteen

Avery

I’m excited to be back at work, though they have transferred Misha to another school. I spent all of last night searching the internet for places I could go where I wouldn’t see Denis around every corner and equally where my father wouldn’t find me. But then I walked in this morning, and it was like coming home. Of course, I can do this anywhere, but I genuinely like The Sunshine Road Day School.

“Hey, Avery.” One of the new teachers, whose name I have shamefully forgotten, pokes her head around the door to my office. “Laurie wants to see you.”

That cannot be good. She’s probably still pissed at me because of the whole Misha debacle, but I stand by my assessment—privately, because I’ve already retracted it publicly.

I walk down the hallway and look into the classroom windows as I pass. There are kids playing in one room, arts and crafts in another, older kids using the school provided and Somov sponsored tech. As the thought hits me, I know I’m screwed. Denis took Misha out of school here. And along with Misha went all the Somov money.

My head is already hanging when I walk into her office. Not because the teachers in the other rooms all gave me the sympathetic see-you-around looks as I passed, but because I know. I never mattered here as much as the money I made them lose.

“Avery, sit down.” Her voice is strong, commanding, like she’s pumped herself up for this. Probably is expecting a confrontation.

I sit on the hard, plastic chair in front of her desk. She has a file open in front of her, doesn’t look up for twenty or thirty long seconds, then slaps the folder shut and folds her hands on top. It’s a power move. A show of her strength. I’m not impressed. It’s weak compared to where I’ve been and who I’ve spent the last weeks with. Almost fucking laughable.

I’m already bitter.

“I guess I don’t have to tell you how badly your report to CPS about Mr. Somov has hurt us here at the Sunshine Road Day School.” I hate the way she refers to the school by its entire name. It’s a new habit, but one I detest.

“I’ve spoken with Mr. Somov, retracted my statement, made sure Misha is home with him.”

She sighs. “Yes, but he took Misha from the school, and now the state is investigating us based on your ‘false’ report.”

Her use of an air quote is earned, but it pisses me off just the same. I don’t have an answer for her. The inevitable is coming and speaking won’t stop it. And she won’t be satisfied until she’s certain she’s pointed out how this is my own fault.

“We’re going to have to let you go.”

And there it is. I nod and stand because we’re through here, and I have nothing to say. We’re in a school with little kids so the “fuck you” I want to give her is inappropriate, though deserved.

When I’m at the door, she calls out.
