The nu-metal bands had the heaviness of metal but drew from alternative rock and grunge’s sense of songwriting so they often avoided overly technical riffs, or lengthy instrumental sections. Many heavy metal fans and guitarists write off this whole subgenre but the change of aesthetic allowed a different range of influences to seep into metal.

Diminished Seventh Arpeggios

The word ‘arpeggio’ is just a posh was of saying ‘play the notes of a chord separately’. Arpeggios are treated as melodic devices just like scales and modes, except they have wider intervals between each note.

A diminished seventh chord (different from the diminished triad found in the Locrian mode) is a four-note chord with the intervals 1, b3, b5, bb7. All of the notes in the chord are a minor third apart.

When the notes in a chord are all the same distance apart it is referred to as a symmetrical chord. The musical benefit of this characteristic is that any diminished motif can be shifted up or down in minor thirds while still staying within the tonality.

Diminished arpeggios are not found in the major scale but occur in both the Harmonic Minor and Phrygian Dominant scales. Given their symmetrical nature, there are only three possible different diminished arpeggios before you repeat one in a different inversion.
