Kevin knocked again. He still hadn’t gotten used to how fancy Sofia’s neighborhood looked. He waited a while before knocking again. Just as he raised his fist, he heard footsteps coming from the other side. They were heavy, like those of a giant who had just awakened from their sleep. He swallowed, expecting to see Sofia’s father as he opened the door.
To his surprise, on the other side was a blond girl of small stature, with doll-like features and curvy eyebrows that made her look angry.
“Who are you?” asked the girl upon seeing him.
“Uhh … I’m Kevin, Kevin Miller, is Sofia home?”
“No,” she replied.
“Let him come up!” shouted Sofia from the second floor.
“What?” yelled the girl. “I won’t let you bring a boy to your room!”
From the corner at the top of the stairs, Sofia’s head popped out; her hair was damp and disheveled, but still so long it seemed to touch the ground. She looked beautiful.
“I’m not that kind of girl, Lia,” said Sofia. “Let him in, it’s important.”
“How important?” Lia insisted.
“Excuse me,” Kevin said, pushing her gently aside.
“Where do you think you are going?” Lia said, standing before him again, cutting him off.
“To Sofia ‘s room. If you don’t want to listen, put on some headphones.”
“Kevin!” Sofia yelled, peeping out again, this time with a relentless look.
“You and I are going to have a serious conversation,” Lia said to Sofia with the severity of a mother.
“You’re younger than me!” Sofia yelled.
“Exactly,” Lia replied.
“Calm down, both of you,” Kevin said, turning his attention to Lia. “We’re going to finish a project that we should have already done, and we have only two days left to deliver it. It would’ve been ready by now if someone didn’t forget to do her research in advance…” He looked at Sofia as if trying to blame her.
She hesitated for a second, still trying to understand what was going on. Once she figured it out, she began to follow suit.
“I already said I was sorry about that,” said Sofia with puppy eyes, Kevin had to make an effort not to laugh at her acting skills.
“An apology is not going to save us from an F,” he said.
“Alright,” Lia said crossing her arms. “I’ll keep an eye on you two.”
Sofia nodded and Kevin went upstairs. The hallway on the second floor reminded him of the one at his house. The image of the broken window jumped to his mind. He shook those thoughts away as soon as they came. Sofia led him to a room on her left. It was rather small, with a variety of toys arranged along several shelves so orderly that they could be part of a plastic army. The blue of the wall contrasted with the red sheets of the small bed with car drawings and a stereo on top of a night table. Despite the bright mood, Kevin felt a heavy burden on his shoulders. Sofia stood by the door.
“It’s been a while since someone else has been here,” she said.
