Quinn was angry. She was definitely going to be here for a while. His truck had broken down two days ago when he came back from town with a few groceries and some takeout. Now, his only way out was by horse.
He went to his room, shut the door and contacted the Pine Grove Stables on the CB radio that was set up in the closet. He didnât enjoy being contacted by the outside world, but he was smart enough to know that he did need some way to contact people if there was an emergency.
And here one was. He needed to let them know she was safe. They were relieved and informed him it would be a while before they picked her up. Since they knew she was unharmed, and in his care, they didnât feel the pressure of risking someone elseâs safety trying to get up there in a vehicle when the roads were impassable. There were many people that needed immediate assistance, she was no longer a priority.
Quinn had no choice but to agree. He had turned off the radio and closed the door. He dropped down on his bed and removed his hat.
He ran his hand over the left side of his face. The scar ran from his cheek around his left eye and upwards towards his hair line. Plastic surgery was one of the options he was given. He wasnât interested. The scar was a symbol. A reminder of his poor choices. Choices that tore apart his family.
His thoughts trickled back to the woman, assaulting the peace and quiet of his home. He found out three things about her tonight. She was fluent in more than one language, worked as a translator and she could cook. This was surprising.
The question was how long she would hold up under these conditions before she started whining. Anyone who looked like her never suffered, they usually had everything handed to them. He wasnât giving her anything. If she was going to be here, she could pull her own weight. Hadnât she offered that at dinner? Well, heâd see if she really meant it.
He stood up and walked out the door of his room and down the short hall to the opening into the main living area. He scanned the room. She was nowhere in sight. He walked back to the spare room and looked in, empty.
A rush of panic filled him, and he hurried back into the living room. Thatâs when he saw her curled up on the couch, asleep. When he first walked in all he saw was the back of the couch. She was hidden from view. Not until he walked around the front, did he see her body snuggly wrapped in the burgundy throw.
He chose that moment to study her. She had a black and blue mark on her cheek and a slightly skinned nose from where she fell on the deck. There was a moment of regret that he was responsible for marring those striking features.
