the place where heart-as-experienced originates simultaneous inner presence with radiance. Warmth, intimacy, unity, and circulation of sacredness are felt here.

Allow attention here to flow “back” to the region of the throat and to the region of the brow, and “down again,” to heart.

“Hail to the Solar Plexus!” Allow attention to move to the top of the stomach, toward the back. Notice attention here, flowing from the 300

heart, into the very center of will. The explosive, outward “I will” — felt now as the power of pure receptivity.

Al ow attention to slowly and rhythmical y flow, upward through each center, and downward. These holy body centers differ from “chakras”; they are centers of aligning attention, retrieving us from scatteredness on the one hand and excessive single-centeredness on the other. Notice how we feel centered, “here,” ful , present, within a pervading, always-present silence as the prayer/practice concludes.

2. The Silence With eyes closed, place attention at any specific region at the periphery of the body. For example, place attention at the edge of your right arm. Notice what that feels like: it is as if you are being lightly touched by the Silence that always encompasses and embraces our bodily existence, transforming biology into spirit-soul-body presence.

301

Shift attention to another peripheral place of the body, such as the edge your left leg.

Notice again the very palpable presence of the Silence, as if being lightly touched by an invisible, caressing presence.

Then, as you shift attention to various peripheral places of the body, notice how the Silence announces itself wherever attention occurs. You feel as if being lightly touched, subtly embraced, touched by invisibility — body relaxes, tightness

eases, expansion occurs, body-awareness increases in intensity, and the existence of a new sensation occurs, the sensation of healing, of coming into wholeness.

When noticing the Silence at the periphery of the body, feel what that is like for a while, then, at one of the bodily peripheral places, with your attention, enter into that exact region where you noticed what the Silence is like. In this act of “entering,” of allowing your attention to flow into the 302

bodily-felt silence, you identify completely with the Silence, you become the Silence.

You pour your being into the Silence.

What was experienced a moment ago as a subtle sensation now becomes intimately felt from within. The particular peripheral body-location of the Silence yields to an all-pervasive subtle sensing that is the presence of the Silence.

3. Gesturing “Heart”

As the ease and comfortableness of the Silence adjust, we enter the heart through another form of resonance. We do not just go from the Silence into heart awareness.

Within the Silence, with your lips, silently gesture, speak, the word “heart.” An immediate and fairly strong bodily resonating of the word occurs and it is as if the whole of the Silence reconfigures itself as an intense, felt silence at 303

the place of the heart.

At this place of strong bodily resonance we gently place attention within the center of the heart. Stay within the heart for as long as it remains comfortable.
