Chapter Three

Marley had finally finished setting up the newest exhibit of his maritime museum, and overseeing the shipment of another that was on loan to the Smithsonian. Walking through the market on his way to the marina, he let his mind wander to that instance during his last trip to the Mediterranean. On both dives, he was certain there was someone behind him, a presence molding to him. He initially thought Clay was pulling pranks on him, until he would see Clay in front of him. Those were fleeting moments, but seemed to last for much longer. No sooner had he felt the presence, seen Clay, and turned, than he realized he was alone. There was nothing there but water, silt, and history. There was only an occasional flash of silver he believed to be a fish darting about, even though he half wished it was the merman from his fantasies. But that was all. Yet, in those brief moments, he'd felt a familiar connection, a completion of himself, though one he'd never experienced before. “Sorry. We can do it another time.”

“Nooo, no apologies man. I feel ya. You've been dry-docked for what, almost a month now? I'm surprised you haven't taken her out yourself already. We've got only day trippers on the books for the next week, but Sammy can take them out locally on one of the smaller boats.”

“Okay, no worries. Just thought that we could use the trip for some extra business.”

“Wait, wait. Look. There's word that some big shot underwater photographer is doing some work around the island. Another 'Road to Atlantis' photo spread, I'll bet. I'm sure we could entice him to come along for a trip. Especially considering your theory about how Atlantis was more than one city and is now inhabited by mermaids.”

Marley could hear her smirk, and audibly sighed at yet another poke from Sera about his theories. “I just mentioned them once. One time I say I thought I saw a mermaid, actually a merman, and—”

“You know it's what you believe, Marley. And you know I'm teasing you. I'm your best friend, that's my job. And just because I'm not a believer doesn't mean that they aren't real. Damn man, I believe that you believe,
