Alternative Therapies: Kegel Exercises & Massage

Kegel Exercises

Also known as pelvic floor exercises. You can do these on your own and at any time by contracting and releasing the sphincter muscle (the one you use to stop urine flow).

Practice holding the muscle for 3 seconds and then releasing several times a day. The main benefit is that you’ll strengthen the sphincter muscle.

Note: If you’re a female and have a weak pelvic floor (e.g. after giving birth) then consult with your Physician first to determine the right type of exercise for you.

Here is a resource that you can visit for more information before you see your Physician:

Gluteal Massages

Having a gluteal massage, whether it’s from a professional masseuse or a healthcare professional like a chiropractor or osteopath can bring huge relief to the pain of an anal fissure and encourage healing.

Gluteal massages stimulate the flow of blood into the anus, where it’s already restricted.

Ask for help from a partner, a family member or a friend if receiving regular massages from a professional isn’t practical.

A daily gluteal massage will speed up your recovery time.
