Chapter Ten

I was standing in the parking lot where the rest of the plant gatherers had huddled after their search. It felt as if my heart were gripped in a vice when I scanned the small crowd and didn’t see Ariana.

Ricky and I had ended our game early due to a vision he had that featured Ariana running from danger. As with most visions, the picture was incomplete. He couldn’t see what she was running from; he could only sense she was afraid and needed help.

I approached the group, scanning for her face. Coming up empty, I asked Camilla, “Where’s Ariana?”

“She went off to her to check her secret location to see if any golden chalice was flowering. She hasn’t yet returned.”

I felt lightheaded from the fear that struck my entire body like a flame to a candle. Ricky spoke from behind me, “We can organize a search, Gavin. Don’t worry. We’ll find her!”

Just as he uttered those words there was a crashing in the forest above. It seemed like hours, but it only took seconds for Ariana to leap off a short, steep incline onto the parking lot. She bent over at the waist, hands placed on her hips and set her ceremonial gathering basket down on the ground. She rested her palms on her thighs and remained in that position sucking in her breath. Clearly, she fled from something in the forest.

I rushed to her side. “Ariana, what is it? Are you OK?”

I brushed the hair back from her face to see. She continued to suck deep breaths. She attempted to speak between gulps of air.

“I saw a Cascadia hound in the forest…”

She paused to suck down more breath.

“It was almost as if he wanted me to follow him … ” another pause.

“I found the golden chalice and brought it for you … And after I … I …”

She stood and threw her arms around me. It drove me wild to see her upset like this. I held her head to my chest and stroked her hair.

“It’s OK, Ariana,” I whispered to her. “Daddy’s here now. You’re safe. Everything will be OK. We can talk in the car; you don’t have to talk about it now.”

Camilla pulled the other women aside and distracted their curiosity from Ariana by saying, “We’ll return to the village now. Let’s let Ariana recover from her adventure. The good news is that she found us a golden chalice. We will need that soon in our quest for the baskets that were stolen last week. They’ll give us the vision we need to get to the bottom of that mystery. For now, let’s inventory the other plants we’ve gathered and prepare them for drying.”

I grabbed Ariana’s hand and led her to her truck. Ricky followed and stopped at the passenger side with me. “Are you going to be OK, Ariana? Do you need me to file an incident report?”

Ariana adamantly shook her head no.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, I’m sure. I’ll be OK. I’m just a bit shaken up right now and need some time.
