I felt a presence hovering and looked up to find Flo standing in the doorway to the conference room. There was a mischievous, bordering on evil, glint in her eyes and she held a tablet in her hands.

“Can we help you with something, Flo?” Chaos asked her.

I had the sudden feeling like nothing good was going to come of this interruption.

She licked her lips as she walked into the office. It looked an awful lot like she was trying not to smile, or maybe even plain laugh out loud. “I was just wondering if there was something Hawk wanted to share with the class?” she asked, feigning a perfect air of nonchalance.

Her word choice had me wondering what she had on that tablet.

The others all looked at me in various states of confusion, amusement, and expectation.

“Do you?” Rollie asked me.

When I didn’t immediately offer any reply, Flo jumped in with a, “I think maybe he does,” in the kind of voice Bert used on me when she wanted me to admit to our parents that I’d done something wrong.

Surely, this could only mean one thing: the news of my ‘engagement’ had dropped.

I might not have been the brightest bulb, but a part of me had realised that I was probably not getting through this without my closest mates finding out about it. However, in the face of having to outright tell them, something made me hesitate. But it wasn’t like I could play the idiot card if Flo had an article ready to show everyone.

“Uh…nothing that can’t wait,” I said awkwardly, shifting in my seat. “What were you saying about Falkner, mate?” I looked at Chaos and hoped I could bring the conversation back to our meeting.

Flo laughed and walked forward. “Oh, I think the team’s going to want to see this.”

“See what?” Rollie asked as she put the tablet in the middle of the table.

Everyone craned unnecessarily to see what it said. Everyone but me, who slouched down in my chair and felt like Monday morning was not the time to do this.

The headline read ‘CARMICHAEL’S HEART SAFELY SECURED: Socialite’s youngest to wed security mogul’.

Which was all kinds of wrong, but the integrity – or lack thereof – of the Advertiser wasn’t much of a priority just then. I just had to hope it was in an obscure enough place that my parents or their friends weren’t going to see. Not that they thought much of the Advertiser; Dad preferred the Australian and gave zero fucks about the society pages anyway.

I wasn’t sure what was worse. The fact that I’d been expecting an instant barrage of expletives and questions, or that there was dead silence for what felt like forever.

“Aren’t you all glad I procrastinate so much?” Flo said, obviously very proud of herself.

But her words broke whatever silence spell the team had fallen under.

“What the actual fuck?” Rollie blinked at the tablet like that was going to change what was on it.

“This can’t be serious?” Nico looked up at me.
