Chapter 6

Pentheoas power sped up seed germination and propelled growth from the ground the next dawn. By noon, bright green and yellow striped leaves waved in the gentle breeze wafting from Izlet Bay. The magic of the onion accelerated until there were blooms. By the end of the week there were seedpods waiting for harvest. On the morning of harvest, Nyssa sang as she plucked the seeds for her basket and separated the onions from the ground. “To begin again, oh mother.”

The new students for Nyssa’s research program brought their science expertise to the nursery. There were two epigenesists, Anthony and Tim, gene specialists, and a phytochemist, Rachel, a specialist in plant chemicals.

Nyssa greeted her new researchers in her office. “Who is my new phytochemist?” she smiled, sending the warmth of her energy upon the three young people standing just inside the test kitchen with coffee mugs in their hands.

A young woman standing just inside the door raised her hand. “Hi, my name is Rachel Hautts.” Rachel was the shortest of the three. Dark haired and diminutive, she beamed a smile at Nyssa. Her demeanor made her seem taller.

“Good morning, here are your new test subjects.” Nyssa passed the basket to her. “I need a baseline for the compounds in this test subject. Please test these onion seeds and onions.”

Rachel looked down at the contents in the basket. “They’re bright pink! What an unusual color! I’ve never seen a pink onion with striped leaves before.”

“Hybrid,” Nyssa said. “The first of its kind. You are working with a new category of onion.”

“It is also fragrant, remind me, what is the smell?” Rachel asked as she inhaled. The scent filled the room.

“It reminds me of jasmine and honey,” Nyssa said.

James joined them carrying his empty coffee mug. “You wanted to see me?”

“Here are seeds for a new onion trial, the Pen5. I found a new hybrid that is promising in a ditch by my meadow. After searching far and wide, it is also a new onion concept. Let’s see if they will thrive here,” Nyssa said. She handed James a bag.

“Where did you find this one? I’m surprised that you found one so soon. Once again you have worked your special magic. I don’t know how you do it. It is a true gift.” he continued to study the seeds in the basket. I’ll get them planted right away,” James said as he moved to the coffee pot, filled his cup, and exited. His curious expression hanging on still.

Every day Hawk searched the paths for the bootprint, and he found one along the path beside the experimental fields. “Where did you come from?” he muttered to himself. He snapped a picture of the print. It lay alongside the gravel path Nyssa and her students traveled to inspect the plants in development.

“This is like the bootprint we found by the window.” He handed his phone to his father.

“Do you think it came from someone who just passed by here? This morning?”

“Yes, it wasn’t here before,” Hawk said.
