Chapter 11

Sean

“GIVE IT A rest,” I snap irritably at Luke.

He’s mindlessly spinning a salt shaker on the table and the sound is getting on my nerves.

Beside us, Micah is pacing like a caged animal.

We’re all wound tight, ready to spring into action—except for Hannah.

She’s shell-shocked and silent, sitting quietly at the table and wearing nothing but a bed sheet.

I tried to dress her before we left her room, but she pushed my hand away and hugged the sheet tighter, not understanding that I was trying to help.

Now she looks so hollow and alone. Haunted.

“Was that the boyfriend?” Micah asks her.

“Of course it was!” Luke snaps, answering for her. “Who the fuck else is trying to kidnap Hannah in the middle of the fucking night?”

I shoot him a look. It’s not the time to bicker. He drops his eyes, a muscle working furiously in his jaw.

We look at Hannah and she nods.

“Dane,” she says quietly.

Dane the dirty cop.

Christ.

Under the table, my hands make tight fists.

Luke chased him to the road, where he got into a car and drove off. He was too far ahead, and it was too dark, for Luke to make out any details.

It was Micah who had to stop Luke from getting into his own car and uselessly patrolling the local roads. There was no point, but he was furious and powerless.

Someone had almost taken Hannah away from us.

No one needs to say it, but we all know her door was open because Luke hadn’t locked it; he never locks the fucking door.

He feels guilty and his protectiveness is in overdrive, because he likes her. Maybe even loves her.

In just the past few days, she’s become a part of our family.

I look over at her beside me. The bed sheet is wrapped so tightly around her, it’s almost form-fitting. I can make out the shape of her shoulders, arms, and breasts.

I feel guilty, and pissed off. I should have checked her stolen sports car more thoroughly the minute the boys brought it onto the property. I let my guard down.

Of course, I don’t know for sure that Hannah wasn’t in contact with this man. Breakups are hard, and complicated. It could be that she told him where she was in a moment of weakness… but I don’t think that’s the case. I definitely don’t get the impression that she had any second thoughts about leaving him.

And it’s no wonder why. The man in her room tonight was someone capable of merciless violence. He was strong, and he was ruthless, pulling her stark naked right out of the room like that.

No, she wouldn’t have been in contact with him.

I look over at her and notice how small she looks. She is small—short and skinny—but with her vacant eyes, she looks like she’s trying to fade away and hide.

My hearts aches in my chest. This isn’t just a bad boyfriend. She’s terrified.

“There was a tracking device on the Porsche,” I say, finally.

Luke’s head whips up, and Micah stops pacing.

“I found it this morning,” I continue.
