CHAPTER EIGHT

They made their way back to Haven and updated the others about what they’d learned, and the new expedition up the river. David began considering how best to handle this while he waited for Ellie and Ashley to get back.

“So we’re actually going to be able to have showers?” Evie asked as they waited.

“Ideally, yes,” Jennifer replied. “I’ll need to take a look at each home’s plumbing, and I imagine most of it has broken down over the years, so at first we may only have a few designated areas for showering. But we can make repairs, and possibly do some expansions.”

“God, that will be amazing,” April murmured. “I haven’t had a shower in ages.”

“Same,” David said.

A few moments later, Ellie came into the main office.

“Where’s Ashley?” he asked.

“We swung by the new settlement when we heard gunshots,” Ellie replied. “There was an attack by some stalkers. Nothing major, but enough to warrant helping out. Lara and Akila are still down there. Well, Lara is. Akila had gone out to do some hunting and thin out their numbers, as she put it. Lara said that it was the fourth attack just today. So Ashley agreed to stay and help keep an eye on things.”

“Damn,” David muttered, wondering if this was going to be more trouble that he’d initially anticipated. Over the course of those three days, there had been a few attacks each day. Nothing substantial, but enough to warrant caution. He refocused. “How are the others?”

“The hospital crew is fine. Excited, really. Now that we’re actually making progress on the settlement, they seem open to talking about potentially moving.”

“That’d be fucking fantastic,” David said. “Having them right there and having Vanessa and Katya around more often to help out.”

“And to fuck,” Cait murmured.

He laughed. “Yeah, that too. The fishing village?”

“No news there, really. Nothing’s been happening, they can’t help us with regards to a truck or material, but they are interested in trade regarding the new settlement. They also asked if anyone from Val’s group might be interested in coming to live down by the lake. They’ve got a few shacks open and now that the vipers and the squids are gone, there’s more fish than ever.”

David glanced at Val. “What do you think?”

She considered it. “Yeah, I think I could see a few of our people being into that life. Living in a shack by a lake’s edge, fishing all day. I’ll run it by them.”

“So what did you find out?” Ellie asked. “Lara said you found a water machine?”

“Water purifier,” Jennifer replied.

They quickly caught her up on the situation.

“Okay, cool. So who’s going on this particular expedition?” she asked.

“So far myself, Val, and Jennifer,” David replied.

“I’ll want to go,” Ellie said.

“I would, but I’m still busy running this place, getting everything in order for the eventual transition to the new settlement. Now that a few days have gone by and nothing’s exploded, people are a bit more interested,” Evie replied.

“I would, but I’m pregnant,” Cait said with a sigh.
